"Somewhere Over The Rainbow" first heard in "The Wizard of OZ" in 1939. I cried for the first time in public (sort of) and felt embarrassed because I'd been taught that big boys don't cry. Even when I hear it today, I get sad.

Ya know, Somewhere over the rainbow never got to me until I saw the ending of 50 First Dates, with Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. I actually cried...maybe it was the moment or the song...either way, I played it off like I got popcorn salt in my eye...lol

I almost mentioned Aimee Mann's "Wise Up" but decided not to because it's more on my "introspective" song list than my sad song list.

We Have No Life by the LPSG Voices

Featuring Arliss as choir director. Just kidding man.

This has to be a song that always gets me especially since the singer is also deceased:

Dance With My Father by Luther Vandross

Back when I was a child, before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high and dance with my mother and me and then
Spin me around ‘til I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure I was loved
If I could get another chance, another walk, another dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
How I’d love, love, love
To dance with my father again
When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way, I would run from her to him
He’d make me laugh just to comfort me
Then finally make me do just what my mama said
Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he would be gone from me
If I could steal one final glance, one final step, one final dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
‘Cause I’d love, love, love
To dance with my father again
Sometimes I’d listen outside her door
And I’d hear how my mother cried for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me
I know I’m praying for much too much
But could you send back the only man she loved
I know you don’t do it usually
But dear Lord she’s dying
To dance with my father again
Every night I fall asleep and this is all I ever dream

I almost said that, too. If SassySpy hadn't already done it, I would have referred you to the Israel Kamakawiwo'ole version. Such a sweet song. (Good find, Sassy!) Tori Amos also has a good cover, but hers is more sad.

When I was a boy, one of the songs from Charlotte's Web made me cry. (The 1973 cartoon, not the live action version.) "Mother Earth and Father Time" is sweet and sad, but there's another song, sung by a male chorus, that's played around the part of the movie when Charlotte dies. That's always when I lost it.

It is interesting that you would pick that particular song by Luther. When he died the song that hit me the hardest was a duet he did with Gregory Hines. When I looked at that long ago video I realized how young both of them had died. one from cancer and the other diabetes. So ,please donate money in memory of Danny. There are too many people dying way too young. Here is the video I hope you all enjoy it.

This is an old traditional song of heartache that's been done by artists like James Taylor, Joan Baez, Eva Cassidy and many others.
I saw this version live during Lilith Fair a few years ago and it made the hair on my arms stand up.

YouTube: The Water is Wide by Sarah MacLachlan, Jewel and Indigo Girls

The water is wide, I can't cross over
and neither I have wings to fly
give me a boat that can carry two
and both shall row - my love and I

Now love is gentle, and love is kind
the sweetest flower when first it's new
but love grows old, and waxes cold
and fades away like morning dew

There is a ship, that sails the sea
she's loaded deep as deep can be
but not as deep as the love I'm in
I know not how I sink or swim

The water is wide, I can't cross over
and neither I have wings to fly
give me a boat that can carry two
and both shall row - my love and I
and both shall row - my love and I

:tongue1:

:lmao: well said. You are da bomb, meniscus:tongue:
Other people's lives are consumed by making fun of others.

"Dance with my father" was played at my dads memorial service. Still cannot listen to it-

Lives ended too soon, seems I have known too many of them, and yet conquered cancer myself. Its just so sad...

Great song and video choice, Naughty.
And I hope that someday the research pays off, not only for the sick, but for the ones keft behind in grief.

back to the island version of "Over the Rainbow".....

Ok I know this is not sad but this is one of those songs that I remember where I was when I first heard it. It was Luther Vandross's first hit. I was in college and driving down the road on a hot summer day and this voice stopped me in my tracks. Listen to "Never too much". I couldnt rest until I had located the original video made right after the song was released. That is his voice at its youthful smoothest.

Thanks, SassySpy. This is the first time I've heard "Somewhere.. . ." since Katheryn _____ sang it on American Idol in '06. Her beauty just intensified the meaningfulness of the song to me.
But have you heard THIS version? Its a much happier feeling I get...

yes meniscus, I have all their music  great - arent they?
gosh, and great thread even if we are veering a bit!
