I recently purchased my first cock ring and decided on one that was marketed as adjustable with a "quick release" design (kind of looks like a lasso rope). To be honest the thought of using a traditional ringed one I find a bit scary given that it is meant to constrict the blood flow to the penis and thus it seems like it might not be easy to get off while hard. I have read a few stories that resulted in an ER visit and that has me thinking twice about trying them.
So for those who have used regular cock rings, the first question is of how safe are they? Can you easily remove them with an erection if you had to and how do you know if they are too tight? Would a "one-size-fits-all" be safe or would it be better to buy an individual sized one and how do you know what the right fit is given that if I understand correctly, it is meant to be put on while still soft?
The second question is, should it be worn during orgasm or taken off? I have read accounts that claim one will get a more intense climax if it is on yet I've also seen some say it will be greater (especially the shooting force) if you remove it right at the moment you feel the ejaculatory inevitability. With my adjustable one I have found it is difficult to come with it on. In fact, the one time I did have an orgasm the release of semen was just a small delayed dribble leading me to believe it was a retrograde ejaculation. Could it be it was too tight? Even though it didn't feel like it (in fact it might not have been tight enough since it didn't keep a firm enough erection the whole time) but to me it makes sense that if the ring is restricting blood in the vessels it could also restrict the semen in the urethra.
Any advice on best way to use a traditional cock ring and get over my (maybe unreasonable) fear of using one would be appreciated. Also what would be the safest material? Rubber I think would be, while I think metal might be downright foolish unless one really knows what they are doing.
