San Fran - Travel & Phones

So i've decided to get away for 10 days , the weather in the UK is killing me and San Fran is supposed to be really nice. While i want to bin my phone so work can't get hold of me i'd like to get a sim for my iPhone so i have the option to wifi or to call out .

Whats the deal with pre pay sims in the US.. Can i just get one from any store like in the UK, load it with cash and i'm good to go (my iPhone is unlocked).

If so sounds like a plan, next question what should i do for 10 days in SF?

The cell phones that take sim cards out here are from AT&T. They sell them in Walmart, Best Buy, Radio Shack or any AT&T store.
