The viability of Palin is contingent upon how the economy improves or disolves and several other things. It is currently November of the year in which President Obama was sworn in. It is barely a year since he was elected.

There are hopes and there also expectations of Mr.Obama and his administration as well as expectations of both Houses, which now lean to the side of the Democrats. If they do not get people back to work, if they do not get money back into the pockets of the citizens, if things continue to look bleak, if the country has not exited from Afghanistan, the Republicans can easily put up Palin or Huckabee or any of a number of others from their roster. Palin has nearly three years to get a groundswell of support going for her. Three years to cultivate a new softer, less screechy image, to ride and play on the network circuit. The same holds for every other Republican who wants the position. They all have a viability based in part on what happens on the National level. Things go poorly, their stock rises. Things turn around and go well, their stock drops.

The thread title makes it seem as though it's asking if she's a viable contender to win the presidency, whilst the OP asks if you merely believe the GOP will put her up as its nominee.

Based on that reading of the OP, and my experience with the willfully ignorant and proudly stupid contingent of our citizenry, I tend to agree with Rob's position.

Apparently a book packaged as a visual parody of her biography Going Rogue: An American Life has come out simultaneously with the latter: it is called Going Rouge: Sarah Palin, an American Nightmare. It is a collection of pieces about the ex-governor by various writers.

I still can't get over the % of people still behind her. For me this says I really don't understand the masses. I guess the Republicans think if she was in office at least it won't be a Mormon ...and the Christian Right is happy.... and she'll go along with whatever they want. I see her as a joke...a very deadly joke.

And I still can't get over the % of people that are livid and vengeful at everything she does/says, while they bitch for her to go away.

Where in the world is the contradiction in that?

If my eyes were lasers, she would have been reduced to a puddle of plasma on the floor months ago.

What really amazes me is that anyone could take her seriously as a GOP candidate. The GOP stands for conservative views, opposes gay rights, demands abstinance as the only sex education, is deluded enough to think that "Reaganomics" did anything other than making the top 3% wealthier, and stands not for traditional family values, but instead, 13th Century family values.

Palin has a big mouth, never checks her facts before opening her mouth, has had not one, but I now hear two daughters pregnant outside of the institution of marriage, and had a "bulldog" attitude that quite possibly cost her running mate a candidate for the Presidency of the United States an election. It was very much Ms. Palin who gave the Presidency to Barak Obama on a silver platter.

I had hoped that her 15 minutes in the spotlight were over. I know that I am not alone in that viewpoint. If she remains a political force in any way the only way it will be of benefit to the GOP is if she switches her party affiliation.

She has the power to single-handedly sink GOP candidates with her verbal torpedos at a rate higher than anyone could ever imagine.

She is absolutely a publicity hound. By Summer of 2010 her book will be selling for 90% off in the clearance stores, and available on Amazon for next to nothing.

I really hope that she works really hard for the GOP because she will sink every candidate she campaigns for.

I fully expect the GOP in the not too distant future to close the door on her. The reason that they have not done it is that if they close the door too quickly on her, they will increase instead of decreasing her popularity with the lunatic fringe.

She is nothing but a liability to the GOP and her time will be coming to an end soon. She got her run, she got her book, she's got her illigitimate Grandchildren and soon she will go quietly into the night.

The most striking thing about Sarah Palin, and the primary reason for her popularity is that she precisely embodies the character and characteristics of her constituency. More than any other candidate I've ever seen, she is her base.

I am horrified by the willfully ignorant, yet unabashedly proud and aggressive "conservative" that makes up the GOP base these days. Palin is indeed the poster child for this "type". And this is why she is so very polarizing.

I never have figured out why anybody would want to be President of the United States. It has to be one of the worst positions in the world. It's extremely high stress. Everybody blames you for everything that's wrong in their own lives. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't job.
I'd rather clean toilets for a living.

Yup. I agree. I've always been amazed at how just four years in office seems to drain all past presidents to the point that they look far older than they really were. Of course, Reagan had a good barber who knew the value in a Hollywood dye job. But even Reagan looked more like a Shar Pei when he left office, even though he started with a great set of deep wrinkles.

Palin would, in 2012, most likely be mid stride through menopause. Women have it rough. But I have no sympathy for someone more likely to waste time on Welcome to YOUBETCHA.COM than say . . . Slate Magazine or something just as frivolous.

AH, she allows people to feel empowered because she stands for everything a lot of us here think is wrong with America. She for Flag waving mindlessness. Anti abortion. Pro family, anti regulation. Apparently, pro stupid, because she can't see the big picture from where's she's at. She believes like Mike Huckabee, that the world is less than 5,00 years old. ('cause the Bible tells us so...)...

...excerpts from her book show a revisionist mentality, disregarding of facts, and a "that's not what I meant" viewpoint.

Its been called "historical fiction."

It will interesting to see how the Republicans are going to handle this... they need a populist person for any chance to regain power... they also need someone they can control.

They found that person in George W... popular (someone you can sit and have a beer with... clearing brush all day on his ranch).. and as smart as a box of kleenex. The real folks controlling the government -- Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc... all the guys from the Ford administration. (see NewAmericanCentury)

They need to do it again... Palin sort of works... she is popular, doesn't know anything... but I don't know if she is as controlable as Bush was.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the American people.

Somehow ignorance has become a virtue in American society... where you can lie, get caught red handed, and as long as you continue to deny it, everything is ok.

Why do we not look up to smart intelligent people anymore? Instead we tolerate and give voice to people that deny science (believing the earth is 5000 years old???), give voice to people that are homophobes and create laws that discriminate.

How can we seriously be talking about a possible Presidential candidate that took 7 years to get a (4 year) journalism degree?? Thinks she has foreign policy experience because she can see Russia from her house?

I mean really... WTF?

The key to making a political comeback is to have somewhere to come back from -- and somewhere to return to. Sarah Palin can't make a comeback because she didn't go anywhere. Not up, not down. Not sideways. Aside from a brief and totally artificial post selection bounce last year, Palin remains a fixed political commodity.

she was not tough enough to stand up to her critics when she was governor, quit when the going got rough, how the hell does she think she is tough enough to be president?
