I saw the vh1 show about Norway and the fascination many people there have with Satan and heavy metal. It's a SuperSized combo type deal. Apparently, everyone in the country is very aware of this and accepts it?! I am 100% serious!!! It appears to be quite the "in" thing and they all appear to literally "worship" heavy metal of some subgenre. I cannot recall the name... Dark Metal? Anyways, they happily tell you about loving metal and oh yeah, historical church burnings, hurting their own people, overall destruction of their own homeland!!!!??????????????? WTF! Metal IS nothing like that shit. It is many other things...aside from the music...like smashing gear, destroying hotel rooms, excessive and very deadly...medicine, groupies-to-go and overall sexy, bad boy "I AM the coolest. Look at ME!" All perfectly NORML (haha) Rockstar stuff. Metal has struggled for respect from the masses for years. And now we have this to shoulder? Not fair people!!! Why didn't Satan help them develop a new style of music all their very own? I'll pray for it :) W h a t e v e r. What do you all think of this? Live and let live or what? I hope some people from Norway read this and share their view. I am in a bad mood now :-( I guess I'll just have to go to the Gallery and do some window shopping. Works like a charm everytime! :)

Yeah, it's called black metal, and this Norwegian variant of it has been around for about 20 years; this is nothing new. As far as I'm aware, very few people take their extreme anti-Christian or National-Socialist views seriously, but in a country as irreligious as Norway, the overall idea of anti-religion is bound to get some ground. Very, very, very few people supported the early '90s church burnings. It was basically Varg (who went to jail for that, among other things), Gaahl, and a few other hard-line black metalers. Everyone else viewed them as needless destruction of Norway's history.

Many black metal bands, though, do not take themselves nearly as seriously, and some are even tongue-in-cheek. It's just that now when someone refers to themselves as "black metal," they are more-or-less forced to adhere to the stereotypes of what to write about (basically limited to Satan and Norway), what to wear on stage, the taking of pseudonyms, etc. Furthermore, why the fuck were you watching VH1:tongue:? Of course they're going to sensationalize a lot of stuff; they're hardly the most reliable source for this kind of stuff.

Also, here's my current favorite black metal song (even though I'm not a particularly big fan): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdRtZok4UTU

But that's the thing, none of that is metal to me. That's just being stupid. But I realize to some people that's what metal is. But to other people metal is the whole satantic thing, and then there are cheesy ones who sing about dungeons and dragons, plus the bands that just try to be as techincal as possible, and the list goes on. It's a very diverse genre of music and because of that people can view it very differently. I'd just focus on the stuff you like, and ignore the stuff you don't.

--the show made it seem like this has run rampant around the country. I'm so happy to know that is not the case :-

Haha! I knew you would comment on that. It aired after the heavy metal show they run. I watch that whenever I remember it's on. Recently saw Blackie :), Dio with Geezer, and some others. It's a good show. Check it out sometime.

Have you ever thought of writing? Like for Kerrang! Or some similar metal publication? Natural fit for you.

Thank you for the compliment, but I wouldn't aim for Kerrang! or any other metal-focused publication if I were to try to get into music journalism. Metal is not my favorite genre; it is a rather distant second behind progressive rock. However, prog-rock hasn't been marketable since ca. 1974, so I don't get too many opportunities to write about it. I'm also a relative newcomer to metal, having only gotten into it a little over a year ago, so I am still in the process of familiarizing myself with many bands and the genre's history.

Give the black chick that can SING a microphone, or the other guy that delivers pizza, unknown to the masses that can SING a microphone.

I have heard about Black Metal. During the 80's I was exposed to Mexican Death Rock, Gothic stuff (Including Christian Death, Roz could not sing either.)
There is never any reason to glorify Satan, it has been my experience that those who do are usually dark and miserable self destructive people. Negative energy follows them and none of the vocalists from these bands can sing. It's all a bunch of growling and grunting and carrying on.

To quote a line from a movie: "It is not the one thing, it is the dismal tide"

IMO This whole genre of music is dismal and it is very rare to see artists like Evanescence do something worth listening to.

OH MY GAAAHH, WATER IS WET!!!1!1!11

My favourite from that scene is Dead, the first singer for Mayhem, depressive, psychotic, obsessed with death, he buried his clothes and even himself at times, he starved himself so he could get lesions, even his satanic buddies thought he was crazy, until one day he blew his head off, and one of the band members took a picture of the scene and took some skull fragments which he used to make a collar.

My favourite black metal song:

YouTube - Blut Aus Nord - Procession of the Dead Clowns

Well,it would be weird if they could sing, if there is a hell, of which I'm close to sure that there isn't, I wouldn't expect the mean, mean demons to sound like Celine Dion, then again....

Very few people take it seriously. People like the music and the counterculture it represents, but few people take the literal message of the music to heart.

Did you just call Evanescence black metal? I'm really not a fan of black metal as a whole, but that's pretty insulting to black metal. Or metal at all? They're really more goth-rock than anything else. And shitty goth-rock too.
