I've never come seen any action in any gym saunas or steam rooms, although the gym I belonged to for the longest time did not have them. The gym I currently go to has a sauna but it is coed so it is required to wear at least shorts in them. I can imagine that something might happen there at times but it would be very risky as you can't always tell when someone is coming, especialy from the women's locker room.
I grew up taking old fashioned saunas heated with a wood stove. And for everyone's information, the correct way to pronounce "sauna" is "SOW-na" and not "SAW-na" like 99% of the people say it. The sauna came from Finland and the ones you find in most health clubs are way too dry. A good sauna has humidity by throwing water on the hot rocks.
I know, I know... every gym sauna will have warnings about being electrocoded if you throw water on an electric stove but that is NOT true. I used to sell electric sauna stoves and had one in my home for many years so I know it is not true. They put that warning up because some people can not stand the high heat coupled with the high humidity. I hate the dry heat of a gym sauna and if there are people sitting in there when I enter I'll politely ask if I can throw some water on the rocks. This separates the men from the boys!
Don't fall for the old trick of someone saying if you want it hotter to throw hot water and if you want it cooler to throw cold water... it doesn't matter... you'll get a great sweat out of either!
If Finland it is very normal for people of both sexes to share a sauna together and it is not thought of as a place for sex but rather a place to cleanse your soul and body.
