My only theory to explain the "ho-hum attitude" is that gays are a somewhat invisible minority. It's makes it easier to ignore them.
I think that also explains why more straights than gays think that being gay is accepted by most of society. Sure, if you're straight, everything seems groovy. Must be nice!
And then you have a lot of straight people whining, "Why do gays feel like everyone is against them?" Maybe those people think about news stories like this one to help answer that question.
Guy-jin, you're a cool straight guy. :headbang:
If there's a silver lining to the whole Prop 8 bullshit, it's that it gained attention for how homosexuals are being openly prejudiced against by the public at large. It's hard for anyone to honestly admit they don't know about Prop 8 or anti-gay marriage laws at this point.
That and things like this issue with the Lutheran school are only propelling recognition of that intolerance in society at large.
But I will say that I think the LGBT community is going to have a harder time of it than most groups, if for no other reason than bigots can always fall back on the "it's a choice" argument, a luxury they didn't have when they were racists against blacks and so forth.
Oh, and I used "ho-hum attitude" very purposefully. The sheer number of straight people out there who think "civil unions" are equivalent to "marriage" and therefore it's "okay" that gays can't get legally married is
astounding.
