Today I visited my dental hygienist, and after my teeth were sparkly clean she asked if I used a tongue scraper. I had not, but I'd heard of them before...and I asked her how they worked. Basically, they are flexible plastic blades that you scrape across the top of your tongue and in theory they remove built up bacteria, food build-up and fungi.

Do you use a tongue scraper? Is it an American thing or is it universal? Are you somewhat disgusted to learn that you have an accumulation of bacteria, dead cells, food, and fungi on your tongue? Will you ever French kiss again???

Since I was a child after I finished brushing my teeth I just give my tongue a few brushes (with the toothbrush) to clean and freshen it up.

No...not surprised since I was taught by the family dentist and also in grammar school..probably Kindergarten or 1st Grade. We were required to brush and scrape after meals in school. I've always brushed and scrapped my tongue since then.

I've used a toothbrush, with a built-in scrapper on the end for decades...before that I just brushed my tongue and used a scrapper provided by my dentist (which I lost many moons ago).

    Yes, no problem French Kissing....

I have one brush for my teeth (electric) and one brush for my tongue (manual) keeps my breath nice and fresh.

I use tongue scraper or a very soft bristle tooth brush to clean my tongue ever since I known myself. I couldnt ever imagine not scraping my tongue . I floss so often and always scrape the staleness off my tongue, whether it be after drinking a shake from the gym, or after a long flight or after a meal. Once you get used to that routine you feel so filthy for any less.

I usually just brush my tongue along with my teeth, with some mouthwash to back it up.

I always brush my tongue. I hope it helps. Been doing it since I was a kid because I'm self conscious about my tongue - it's very white compared to any other I've seen. x.x

Is it really necessary to scrape your tongue if you follow-up with antibacterial mouthwash after every brushing?

I always brush my tongue after with my brush, but I do mouthwash after every brush like Moxie says.

    Burns so good.

No. Dental hygienists have told me a toothbrush just pushes the stuff around. A scraper, rinsed between scrapes, removes all the yucky stuff.

Yes. Just like if you use a waterpik, you still need to floss.

I think tongue scraping is an ayurvedic thing, actually - pre-dating American dental hygiene obsession by one or two years ;-) I've seen thin strips of metal that you bend into the appropriate curve for your mouth and scrape away merrily.

It's a must in the morning when your breath is at its most kickenest.

Totally! Tongue scraping is fantastic...weird as that sounds. When I can't do it (because of travel or what have you) I notice a definite change in my breath.
