You know, I enjoyed his portrayal of "Jack." But, at the same time, I expected a severe backlash from the Gay Community because Jack was such a joke, stereotype, and caricature.
Maybe this is the exact reason he wasn't forthcoming in being out? You have the remember that, even though actors have some creative license, it is ultimately the writers, director and producers that decide the direction the characters will take. Maybe he didn't want his portrayal of "Jack" to reflect badly on his actual personality.
I also don't think that it was annoying everyone needed to keep reminding the public that Eric McCormack was straight in real life. Every mention was, "Eric McCormack, who is straight, plays 'Will Truman'...."
