It's never been this true, if someone said "the world laughs at you"
UN members laugh at Trump after 'most accomplishments in US history' claim

I had the chance to watch it live. He seemed to be very surprised about the reaction of his audience... but then he kept on talking and it sounded more like he would talk to the US Senate and not to the UN. Talking about his wall, low unemployment and increasing wealth in the USA... what the hell should Swaziland care for unemployment rates in the USA?
Later he got it and was talking about his war trade on China and always pointed out he would protect and care for his allies...

If its one thing the world loves its listening to Americans brag about how "great" they are.

What an embarrassment.

Your thread topic was WAY too kind. It should read like this:

The video of this incident has frequently been inappropriately edited. Well done @Perados for posting a proper video. There's a two-part laugh structure:
1) a quiet laugh from a very few people in the audience
Trump's statement that he didn't expect that
2) a general laugh.

Note that (2) is Trump leading the audience. This is not the audience laughing at Trump. He's not ignored (1) but rather addressed the issue, in effect giving the audience permission to laugh.

(1) is interesting. Laughter has different meanings between cultures - for example very different in East Asia to Europe/N America. It can be embarrassment. It can approve the pride of the person being listened to. It can be happiness and approval. It would be very interesting to know the ethnicity of those who engaged in the initial quiet laugh. If E Asian I think it is a positive sound.

The media have been keen to go with "snigger" for the first quiet laugh and "the world laughs at Trump" for the second. The interpretation of (2) is certainly wrong. (1) may be more nuanced. Trump was actually a reasonably accomplished orator in speaking about (1), not ignoring it, a point the media don't seem to be making.

By the way, I can't stand Trump.

Good point. I think the speech was written for the benefit of Americans, not the UN. This suggests he regards the UN as a bit of an irrelevance.

I suppose in this speech he is speaking to America and the World (not really the UN) and he is saying that his policies get unemployment down. Swaziland has horribly high unemployment. So does the Euro-Zone.

Only one problem with all that: what Trump said was, in itself, idiotic.

Yes, at the end Trump had the laugh on his side.
But that's not the point.
You hear laughter at the UN all the time, but usually you hear them only if the speaker talks about a topic contraire to the interests of others.
You definitely never heard it if an American President talks about the national success of his presidency.

And that's what people will remember.

And that's what people will remember.

We've just seen in the UK Theresa May giving people something to remember from her Conservative Party Conference Speech - she danced onto the podium. In a week's time this will be all anyone will remember, which probably was her intention. Trump didn't plan the laugh, but again it is all anyone will remember. May and Trump have both made speeches where the content will be forgotten very quickly.

In both cases, serious people should take a bit of notice of the content. Trump is the most powerful man in the world. May has a pivotal role in Brexit, which is an important process. I'm pretty sure Trump was really speaking to the USA, perhaps rallying his supporters in the Republican Party. May wants the content of her speech to be forgotten. What she said about Brexit is already out of date. She made comments which put her at odds with her Chancellor, presumably because she felt she had to say something positive. She wants people to forget the words.
