I'm seeking some advice on medications to take for my slightly enlarged prostate.

Yes, I have frequent urination--especially at night. It is not prostate cancer, however, because the doctor has tested me for that.

Three main medications have been suggested:

    1. Flomax -- This is a popular drug that treats the symptoms rather than
the cause. It also has many bad side effects like dizzi-
ness, loss of appetite, and several other unpleasant ones.
IF it helps me, I'd have to take it for the rest of my life.

    2. Avodart (?)--(Not sure of the spelling there.) This is another
manufactured drug similar to Flomax, but it claims
to work on the problem and not just on the symptoms.
It also claims to begin working within a week's time.
Again, IF it helps me, I'd have to continue taking it
for the rest of my life, and it also has mild side effects.

    3. Saw Palmetto tablets -- This is an herbal medicine that claims to
help alleviate the problem naturally. However,
herbal remedies have not been approved by the drug
administration as being 100% safe. Even if they do work,
I would have to continue taking them for the rest of my
    life.

    4. If I take nothing and just let the problem continue, it might worsen
to the point where I'll have to have my water drawn or be operated
    on.

So, that's my dilemma. Any advice, gentlemen? Thanks you!

Go to your local CVS Pharmacy and get a bottle of The Prostate Formula from Real Health Laboratories. I've used this product for 10 months now, and it works great.
Only take the prescription meds as a last resort. Their side effects are horrible, especially Flomax. I used Flomax for one month, then Cardura for one month. Both were prescribed by my urologist. Never again. Unless you like to endure headaches, dizziness, diminished levels of ejaculate, and diminished ability to get an erection, avoid them like the plague.

here is another natural product that combines herbals, aminos and other supplements. if you take these over a few weeks you can arrest the inflammation and growth. and NO drug side effects!!!

Source Naturals Prosta- Response -- 180 Tablets - Vitacost

as far as the FDA approving ANYTHING natural as a cure, forget it. they are drug oriented and more focused on approving drugs that keep people on continual drug regimens. as a matter of fact if you go to the site Life Extension Foundation - Highest Quality Vitamins And Supplements you can see an effort to BAN all natural over the counter supplements, and if it passes we will even have to go to a doctor and get a prescription for vitamin C. sad but true.

I think every male has a slightly enlarged prostate as you age starting at say late 30's early 40's. Nothing says it will continue to enlarge and it may never be more problematic than it is now.

Proscar will reduce the size of the prostate but may reduce your libido and spunk quantity. It may also stop you going bald!

have been taking proscar (cut into quarters) daily as a substitute for Propecia for 3 years. Have to admit, I've had no libido / erection problems or changes, but yes my spunk did loose a bit of it's "thickness".

Before, if I could contain myself and not jackoff for like two days I would have had really thick gooey cream before the proscar. Now it would be much thinner in consistency, but still enough of it to hit me in the face and run off my chest.

Oh and my hair still looks great by the way, lol.

The only drug which may reduce the size of your prostate is Finasteride (Proscar) and that will reduce your libido as well. Flowmax is supposed to improve the flow- I think it may have some effect but I took it and it did not have much effect. Sometimes I would be up several times a night and sometimes take ages to get the flow started. A couple of times I had to go to A&E and be catheterised.
In the end I had the TURP op. and have been fine ever since - I should have had it years before!
My advice is to have the op. and be cured!

My dad had prostate problems, resulting one time in a hospital stay and the roto rooter procedure. His UROLOGIST told him to take saw palmetto. The urologist said " I don't know how it works, or WHY it works, but it does. " He took it, and for about 10 years, had no problems, and went for a protate exam/PSA test yearly. 3 years ago, the doctor found a small spot of cancer on it, so he elected to have it removed. His older brother had the same problem, but elected to try the radiation implants, etc. Long story made short, he passed in February. Since it runs in my family, I have a prostate check/PSA test yearly, even though I have no problems at all..... doc tells me I have a "prostate like a 12 y/o boy"..LOL ! Keep in mind, I'm 37. I think I'm doing okay so far, because I orgasm at least once a day... gotta "keep the juices flowing", so to speak.
If I were you, I would talk to the urologist about taking saw palmetto, and ask him if he thinks using an Aneros prostate massager would be of help. After all, they WERE designed for medical use... (till we figured out they could make you climb the walls in pleasure._)..LOL see what he says about it. The saw palmetto won't give you any side effects like the other stuff will.
To all the guys who read this... PLEASE GET CHECKED REGULARLY when you get to the right age. The test isn't terribly unpleasant... ( I can think of better things to do, but, if it can prevent a problem, so be it ) If you think it's bad for you, think about how the DOCTOR feels !! LOL ! Anyway, I hope this long, drawn out poting will help.

Good God, is any of this advice coming from an actual Doctor? Call your Primary care physician and if necessary see a specialist.

Make sure you are eating a diet HIGH HIGH HIGH in fiber. The prostate is located in the lower bowel and "shit" that does not leave ur body sits there against the prostate.

Make sure you have a full and complete evacuation each time you move ur bowels.

To ensure this, squat on the toilet bowl rim, DO NOT sit on the toilet seat. Sitting makes for a less complete evacuation. Toilets seats are a modern invention. Humans were not intended to sit during a bowel movement. We were meant to sqat, like dogs and cats. I have not sat on a toilet seat in years.

If you don't believe me, google it.

I agree with nudeyorker, take your concerns to your primary care giver or your urologist.

    Forget the meds.
    Reduce meat intake.
Eat only melon one or two days each week.
    Use nutrition supplements.
    Drink water.

If you do massage your prostate then your PSA count will go up and give a false misleading reading.

If you eat a healthy diet, stay in shape and avoid alcohol, prostate problems are often the result of an enduring sex drive that enlarges your prostate as you age. The best treatment is to lay off of sex and give your prostate a break. Only if that doesn't work will you know that you have a serious problem. This is a condition but not necessarily a disease in itself. Docs like to call it a disease in order to sell you designer drugs. But such quacks can be like lawyer middlemen for the drug companies. You just can't trust prescription meds when they have toxic side effects and benefits don't outweigh risks.
