What are your thoughts? I'm behind her!
Kennedy is an attorney, editor, writer and member of the New York and Washington, D.C. bar associations. She is one of the founders of the Profiles in Courage Award, given annually since 1990 to a person who exemplifies the type of courage examined in her father's Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same name. The award is generally given to elected officials who, acting in accord with their conscience, risk their careers by pursuing a larger vision of the national, state or local interest in opposition to popular opinion or powerful pressures from their constituents. In May 2002, she presented an unprecedented Profiles in Courage Award to representatives of the NYPD, the New York City Fire Department, and the military as representatives of all of the people who acted to save the lives of others during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.[4]
From 2002 to 2004, Kennedy worked as chief executive for the Office of Strategic Partnerships for the New York City Department of Education. During this time, she helped raise more than $65 million for the city’s public schools.[3] She currently serves as the Vice Chair of The Fund for Public Schools, a public-private partnership founded in 2002 to attract private funding for public schools in New York City. [5]
In addition, Kennedy is currently President of the Kennedy Library Foundation,[3] a director of both the Commission on Presidential Debates and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and Honorary Chairman of the American Ballet Theatre. She is also an adviser to the Harvard Institute of Politics, a living memorial to her father.
Kennedy has represented her family at the funeral services of former Presidents Ronald Reagan in 2004 and Gerald Ford in 2007, and at the funeral service of former First Lady Lady Bird Johnson in 2007. She also represented her family at the dedication of the William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Park in Little Rock, Arkansas in November 2004

frankly, i do not think she is qualified and if her last name wasn't Kennedy, this would not be happening.

I like her on a private level, but as a New Yorker, politically, I do not want her as my senator, especially since she will not be campaigning or running in an election for the spot....she will get roughly a 4 year term, with Hillary gone, and frankly, being a New York Senator, is a massive responsibility, that she is simply not prepared for.

I live in New York...and I am simply horrified at the idea of her being my senator.

She has no experience! A special election should be called, no appointments. Thats undemocratic.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Fuck senator, with that under her belt she shoulda ran for president.

And per the other appointments... let her run the NY state board of education and improve dropout rates and standard scores, and so forth.... I'm seeing a ton of junior positions handed to her, and no comparitive results.

Simply because I was actually alive when Kennedy was president (not something many here can claim), I have a fond affection for any citizen of Camelot who decides to run for or accept an appointment to a political office. Beyond that meager nostalgic connection, I don't believe she has the necessary experience, nor has she paid the political dues appropriate for that office.

Agree 100%

I certainly appreciate everyones viewpoint. However can you provide any details of what made Hillary Clinton a good candidate for senate?

Can't provide any.
To paraphrase flashy above - if her last name wasn't Clinton...

In all honesty, there is a lot to said for spending one's entire life watching how it's done, listening, learning by example and osmosis. She's spent every waking moment of her life as a political intern. Frankly, that counts for more than you'd think in terms of experience. She's a lawyer, she's a massive fund raiser and she knows how government works. She's got brains, she's got connections.

Sure she probably wouldn't be in the running if she weren't a Kennedy and a legacy but there you have it. And a special election would be a better solution all around but that not gonna happen. So she finishes out Hillary's term and then runs on her own? We could do worse. We could get Andrew Cuomo. Or Fran Drescher.

all the kennedy's are pius alchoholic shmucks.

Um, if you're trying to make someone sound bad, do not use the word "pius" [sic], as that means devout and is generally perceived as a good quality in modern American society.

Said exactly what I would have.

And no. I didn't think Hillary Carpetbagger was qualified either.

She is better than the creepy-looking and questionable Andrew Cuomo (who also wouldn't be anywhere without his father's name).

She was a former two-term first lady and a lawyer. Other than that I don't recall her having any 'real' qualifications.

What? She wants to die too?
Ouch! That seems a tad harsh. I can't believe you went there.

I could be wrong, but I believe there will be a special election in 2010 to decide who finishes the term, regardless of who gets appointed to the vacant Senate seat. So she would be serving for roughly two years. There will be a regular election for that seat in 2012 when Hillary's term ends.

I've never understood the Kennedy cult that so many people belong to. What they ever did to deserve so much attention and praise is beyond me.

I don't either. It's scary. Say the name, 'Kennedy,' and people will vote just on the name alone. Smacks of royalty to me and I find that odiously unAmerican.

The Kennedys are a family of great wealth and privledge. Despite that, ALL of them have worked tirelessly for years to help those whose lot in life has been less fortunate. I think that deserves some admiration.

Caroline Kennedy has zip qualifications to be a US Senator.....I would be surprised if Patterson appointed her, with the crap that is going on in Illinois he would be accused of nepotisom for cowtowing to the Kennedy name. I am sure that there are literally thousands of other people who can serve the state of New York better and are more qualified to do so than her.

Hillary did not have much qualifications but atleast she ran a campaign and the people of New York go to decide...
