God,
Give us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change,
The courage to change the things we can,
And the wisdom to know the difference...

Who else finds this prayer to be particularly calming?

i love the serenity prayer. it has heped me through many a tough time. but i was surprised that there is much more to that prayer. just google it , you'll be surprised. thanks for sharing.

The 'full' serenity prayer,

"Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next."

Beautiful...

Later this month, God willing, I'll have 12 years clean & sober through working the AA program. I love the Serenity Prayer.

It took me a while to learn that the stuff I can change is MYSELF. The stuff I can't change is all the other people and situations outside myself that I can't force to change.

However, the wise person's path is that by changing ourselves, we cause change in our environment including those people and situations that trouble us.

Congrats on 12 years my friend. Yes one of the most difficult things(for me) to do was take a personal inventory. I saw many things about myself i didn't like. I had my work cut out for me. It was not easy. I did not like myself as a person. Today almost 20 years later i've learned to love myself. The one thing that saved me was the so called divine cop out. Realizing i had no control over certain things i would leave it in Gods hands. I am of the opinion that our lives are already mapped out and it's up to us to travel the road he has planned. Be it life or death. So as a person, i am still a work in progress even today. I must also add my life is simply wonderful. I couldn't be in a better space.

Congrats to you. What a wonderful accomplishment.:smile:

The Serenity Prayer is very pretty and uplifting.

Wow! Congratulations!

I wish I can change my sexuality like this too (No, I don't hate homosexuality, just it's easier if I am what my society wants me to be).

Don't say that. People suck and hatred burns for those that are different and do not fit into the norm. Be who you are and be proud of it.:smile:

CONGRATS to you, too, Mr. Snakey on almost 20. Yeah, a personal inventory is the toughest thing that some of us have done. And I'm with ya on turning some things over to God; he's much better at dealing with a whole lot of stuff than I am. Not that there's not still challenges, but my life has taken incredible rewarding twists and turns that it wouldn't have if I hadn't gotten on this path.

My my, I had forgotten where this prayer came from! Thanks for the reminder Mr. Snakey and krispdx.

Many of the spiritual paths I have investigated so far in my life have a similar prayer.

i agree with the sentiment, though i do not agree with the god part. but this is not a thread about religious differences =D

i wish more people would heed the words in this prayer

I do heed the words. That's why this prayer is very calming. It just brings you back to the reality when you're too high above.

I think the Serenity Prayer comes from St. Francis of Assisi. He was full of great stuff like that. Always somehow practical and profound at the same time.
