Sex when you have a hernia?

I was told by my doctor that I need to get my hernia fixed. I can not get it done until the end of the year due to my work schedule. Has anyone had this experience where that had to wait. Did you have sex during this time or forget it (if that is possible)?
I ordered a truss online as I could not find any in the local drug stores. The type I ordered allows my cock to hang through it.
