We've had a number of experiences, some of which have been great, others, not the best. We can understand your apprehension, because as much as we wanted to do it each time (the first handful of times), we were as nervous as could be. Like Pieter said, make sure he's legit and actually has a wife and that she's willing.

Meet them in a safe, public place, like a hotel bar/lounge. Just meet for a drink to see how things go, but reserve some time to go up to the hotel room in case everything clicks. You definitely should have an out, especially if you haven't interacted with the wife much.

You have an advantage in that you can ask him what the wife likes in bed; You won't need to play guessing games when you are with her. He'll get to see his wife stretched (I assume that you are thicker) and the gaping hole that you leave. She might get the fuck of her life.

We've found that a simple phone call after exchanging pics does a lot of good. And yes, meeting in a bar or restaurant is a safe way to go. It's been very fun to see if there's chemistry between my wife and the guy after the initial awkwardness goes away after meeting.
