At this point i think its his team pushing this for publicity. Hes not controversial enough. Hes been well behaved so far in his career. They tried the bearding route but didnt work. This is the only pr angle that will keep him talked about - a must if he wants relevancy.

I just love how Shawn, who claims he isn't gay, is explaining to us, the gays who know that he's gay, what is harmful to the gay community.
I like him, he's incredibly talented, and I hope he gets the balls to come out soon. But he can fuck all the way off with this bullshit.
I'm starting to think that his team is pushing these stories to keep him relevant as a celebrity beyond his music. He wants to juggle both teenage girls and gay guys. I don't doubt his anxiety, but I just don't think it's a result of his alleged sexuality.
The fact he has to mention it multiple times and try to defend his comments makes me assume thats he's hiding the fact he's gay or bi. It reminds me a lot about me when I was hiding the fact I was gay. I wanted everyone around me to see me as this masculine dude, I would always defend my actions if I was being to "girly" or hanging out with a lot of girls.
You're Shawn Fucking Mendes one of the biggest music stars on the planet and you're worried about people thinking you're gay? Well quit addressing it for one thing, the more you talk about it the more people are going to assume you're gay and you're just afraid to admit it, what do you thinks going to happen if you are gay? Your record sales going to crash? Everyones going to quit listening to your music? Nope nothing infact it will probably help your sales.
I mean look at Troye he's a thriving gay singer. Pretty much every girl still wants to fuck him even though he's gay they don't really care, just put out good music and you'll be fine. You're making this a bigger deal than it needs to be, the only things you're going is driving gay fans away cause you're coming off as a bigot thats afraid of being called gay.
He’s relevant enough to sell out stadiums, but as a tabloid celebrity he’s vanilla... but his PR team has nothing to do with his quotes or churning up the gossip rags, he does that on his own. In fact, I don’t think his PR team is anywhere near this stuff or they would have coached him or done something to address it after the RS interview.
I’m not saying make some big splashy statement, but to let Shawn go into another interview and not have him ready to clarify or have a better response was a big mistake. Maybe he doesn’t like to be media coached, but this stuff will continue to pop up if he keeps bumbling it.
The shitty thing too is he’s clearly not homophobic—not saying he’s some great ally, but we know he’s not a bigot—his relationships speak volumes to that, namely his friend and closest collaborator Teddy who Shawn has spoken beautifully about watching her transition journey. What Shawn has is some deep seeded self-loathing about being labeled gay that causes him anxiety—as a queer community, we all know where that comes from, but genuinely he may have not gotten far enough yet for that type of self-realization. That said, if he continues to inflate being assumed as gay as some insult, or feels like he has to put on a macho facade so people don’t call him out as too feminine, then he’s going to (continue to) piss off a lot of people.

Can I just say I’m happy to see mature conversations/opinions on here. Instead of the disgusting and rancid comments we’ve been inundated with. I mean that doesn’t help his situation when the exact community he doesn’t seem connected to is saying how he basically has a clit instead of a dick. That says more about the person than it does Shawn; obviously. I do hope he works out his demons as it were. It would be nice to see an openly gay/bi male of his stature to be proud and comfortable in his own skin. But that might take awhile. We got to remember that as gay men (which is a big portion of his site) we all had hurdles to overcome if we’re not still overcoming them. Anyway, I’m really hoping to see a lot more and hotter photo shoots in the future, and I do agree with the fact that he needs to be more eloquent in his future interviews; it’s not a good look.
I really hate his whole "ho ho I'm boo boo the fool who's never actually been in love" because that's basically me, difference is I'm gay and I grew up in a small town thinking I was the only gay person on the planet and now I'm in a big city and gays only want sex so I really haven't had the opportunity to experience something beyond that, me and him have the same age yet he's clearly better looking and if he's straight then he has so much fish in the market. It kind of makes me think that his personality might actually be really shitty, like he's one of those just really boring people who have nothing interesting to say in a conversation and that's why he can't even have girlfriends cause they just get bored.
For someone trying to mimic Justin's career so much he really didn't learn much. I remember when Justin started I was super young and "Baby" became a massive hit and all sorts of homophobic jokes, a lot of them going beyond homophobia and into transphobia by saying he's a girl. Like there was a lot of nasty shit thrown at him and the guy just lived his life and built his career. Meanwhile Shawn is lying awake at night thinking about a video where he has glitter in his eyes because some people might think he's gay based on that. I think the difference between them is that Justin has charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent meanwhile Shawn has the thrill of just standing there.
I think many gay/bi guys/girls had others assume they were straight, and they didn't need a support system to cope with it. For many gay/bi people, coming out is a daily process. People will assume what aligns with their reality and what they know, one just has to deal with it and let it go. He wants people to assume he's by default straight, and, when the opposite happens, he doesn't want people to assume anything. Love him, but he really needs to get over it. He should check out how many actors, like Avan Jogia and Josh Hutcherson, use their fame for good with the Straight But Not Narrow organisation, and learn a thing or two.
It wasn't just gay men saying that after the underwear shoot. And trying to link jokes about that to his comfort with his own sexuality is simply stupid.
It was a “thing” before the shoot if you can recall. I wasn’t linking anything to his comfort level. I merely pointed out that name calling someone when we know he’s uncomfortable with his sexuality doesn’t help the situation. But seeing as how you like to call people stupid, I’m more than “comfortable” clumping you in that ignorant group too.
