Yeah I have thought about warming up before I walk places. I shall do that.

Potassium could also be a factor. I also get foot spasms rarely which NJQT said are associated with lack of potassium. But I don't like bananas. Are potatoes okay?

Yes, buy new trainers! Asics are awesome. I use them for all my training and I run A LOT. £70 and it's a good investment. I used to have Nike's, which looked cool, but killed my shins. Couple of runs in the Asics and I was back to normal. If you don't want to fork out for new trainers at least invest in shock adsorbent insoles.
