Sadly, there was another senseless shooting in our country yesterday.
My thoughts and prayers are with all involved.
My two daughters and I are always armed and I have trained them as to what to do in a situation like this.
Unfortunately, there are places ( which I avoid ) that prohibit carrying a firearm. These places are the ideal hunting ground for the potential shooter.
It took 4 minutes for police to respond to the scene. That's a lot of time for unarmed citizens to become innocent victims.
The gun isn't the problem, the guns that the good guys carry always turn out to be the solution. Food for thought.

So why does Massachusetts, which has the strictest gun laws in the country, also have the lowest rate of gun violence in the country?

I'd like to think that it's because of people like me. I've stopped two attempted robberies and several assaults by drawing my sidearm.

What you'd like to think and facts are 2 different things.

Btw, California and New Jersey are rated above Massachusetts as to strict laws.

I looked for a state that’s taking gun violence seriously. I found Massachusetts.
Massachusetts offers a model for dealing with gun violence that the rest of the country could follow.

That’s easy. 12.5% of the population is responsible for 50% of the murders. Now look at Massachusetts.

Dunno if that's pulling race into the blame game, but New York State has a higher percentage of black population than the US national average, but has the 3rd lowest gun violence rate (and again, has tight gun control laws as Massachusetts does).

(check my post right below this one though because you guys are talking two different statistics. Rate of gun violence and rate of firearm homicide are VERY different metrics even though both involve people who are dead as a result of a firearm).

Because "gun violence" includes suicide :p

Gun control legislation absolutely and positively reduces the rate of suicide. The data is crystal fucking clear. A lot of suicides are impulse decisions and having a gun around makes them a LOT more likely to succeed regardless.

But if you're only looking at firearm homicide rate, Massachusetts falls closer to the middle (ranked 21 rather than 1).

Suicides are gun violence, but whatever. Massachusetts is tied for 10th for gun homicides. Get your facts right.

Thanks for the input. Statistics seem to cloud knowledge.

Did your mother help you learn those manners?

Again murder rate is not firearm homicide rate. Murder rate is percentage of people murdered by any means including poison, knives, bare hands, pushed off cliffs, thrown in front of trains, etc etc.

Firearm homicide rate is what you're after and you can find it further down the page here in the murder section (Massachusetts is 19th, not 21st, I miscounted earlier): Firearm death rates in the United States by state - Wikipedia

The percentage of people in Massachusetts who die from being murdered with a gun is a little lower than the national average, but not a lot lower.

Gang related violence continues to be a massive driver for these numbers and the reason why states like Idaho and Vermont have such small numbers and why those top 10 low states have lower rates of firearm homicide than Europe even though many of them have much wider access to firearms.

When there is a gun involved there's also money.

Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire are close to Canada. The standard of living is better than the rest of the state.
The median household value is at 350k more affordable than New York or Boston. The other reason, is New England is a Farm land. Farms today are so much different than in the colonial period of the eighteenth century.

This thread looks promising as the best shit show yet...

Just think, if the high school girl/boy that makes popcorn at concessions in the movie theater had an automatic assault rifle there would be no movie theater deaths. Hey, maybe we could hire Rambo types to replace lunch ladies in school, some of them must be able to cook.

You could definitely hide an asshole rifle under and alter boys robes in church and the entire choir could easily be packing...

Wow, I wish I owned a gun manufacturing company. Do you think they've thought of this???

You must have New England confused with the midwest, also known as the country's breadbasket. New England is primarily an urban/suburban area.

Vermont and New Hampshire which are two of the states that do have low firearm homicide rates are majority rural.

Massachussetts is not majority rural, but it also doesn't have low firearm homicide rate.
