The Talented Mr. Ripley

This film, now six or so years old, haunts me.

It's Anthony Minghella at his creative best. It's atmospheric and deeply haunting in a rather disturbing way. Philip Seymour Hoffman (lately of "Capote" fame) is superb as "Freddie". Matt Damon (a Boston native) is wonderfully pathological as Tom Ripley, and Jude Law as Dickie Greenleaf is just superb.

And of course Kate Blanchett (my all-time favorite actress) is wonderful as Meredith Logue. The only real detraction is Gwyneth Paltrow who, I find, ill-suited to her role as "Marge".

The soundtrack is equally mesmeric. Matt Damon sings a version of "My Funny Valentine" that's really quite charming.

For those with a slightly dark cast to their taste in movies I highly recommend this film. It's just impossible to forget on many many levels.

STRONZO, you have great taste... :biggrin1: to this day, I throw in ripley when I am in a movie mood. Jude law and Matt damon are really good at what they do. and the darkness of the film combined with the issues of identity theft.. I love it.:>
DONNIE darko.. another kickass watch.. rent it buy it download it.

Last one.. Life as a House.. I know it is older.. and the story is mush.. but something about it keeps drawing me back. Its got kevin kline, hayden christianson (sp) mary sternemberg (sp) ( I am bad at last names:biggrin1: ) to name a few.. But it is just a "heartfelt tale" and it has a great ending.
Watch it people.. I recommend you will like it:tongue:

I watched 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' and thought it was a very good movie. I was expecting it to be 'silly' Jim Carrey, but was pleasantly surprised to see 'serious' Jim Carrey. His character decides to have the memories of his girlfriend 'erased' from his mind, but midway through the procedure he changes his mind. The movie follows the struggle inside his head as he tries to save his memories. The point of the story is that although love can cause us much pain and anguish, it helps shape who we are and what we become.

Thumbs up!

I have to agree. I was moved. It's an emotional rollercoaster.

I finally got around to watching Walk the Line and I loved it!!!

We also watched The 40 year Old Virgin this past weekend, and while I thought it had some hysterical lines, the over all plot was just blah.

The GF just introduced me to "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and I encourage those who haven't seen it to do so!

It's based on the real life theory that Chuck Berry was actually a killer for the CIA!

Date movie wasn't too bad considering I had heard tons of bad reviews. But it is a cheezy movie so as long as you expect it, you can appreciate it! It also helps if you have seen the majority of the movies they reference to.

Underworld: Evolution was pretty good, but it picks up RIGHT where the first one left off and I couldn't remember the first one at first (but then some of the characters came back to me, but I still need to watch the first one again!)

Fun with Dick and Jane was pretty good, although not as funny as I expected.

I expected a lot from A New World, but was disappointed. The movie looks good and it gets its points across but it is a boring 2 and a half hours that feels like 4 when you are watching it.

Lord of War was a very interesting movie too, I recommend it for sure!

I just bought a copy of it at Costco, and watched it yesteday aft.
It was fantastic. How Joaquin Phoenix didn't win an Oscar, I'll never know.
He was fantastic as The man in Black. Reese wasn't half bad either.
Great pipes on that girl.

Well, I've mentioned before in another thread on fav. movies a 1983 movie by Michael Mann called the Keep. This is a movie i find myself always watching whenever it airs.

It starts out looking like a run of the mill WW II movie but quickly develops into quite a bizarre little piece about "good" vs. "evil" and the subtleties that lie between.

Mann's traditional style, evident even in this early film gives it a kind of dreamlike quality that makes it all the more strange. Music by the supercool Tangerine Dream ices the cake. The dialog between the German army captain (Jurgen Prochnow)and the Gestapo major (Gabriel Byrne) makes for an interesting study, as does the theme of one evil justifying another (as depicted by a dubbed Ian McKellen).

But...I say too much. You'll either hate the movie or won't be able to put it down. Also stars Scott Glenn, Alberta Watson, and Robert Prosky.

gonna join the others and give the constant gardener & the talented mr. ripley hearty recommendations.

another INCREDIBLE if heavy movie is requiem for a dream. how blenda blethen (sp?) lost the oscar to julia roberts in erin fricken brokovitch is beyond me.

two other oldies but goodies: dangerous liasions, with glenn close & john malkovitch, and contact w/jodie foster.

what did y'all think of brokeback mountain? i liked it overall, but wasn't as bowled over as many--felt the opening scenes took forEVER and there was some indelicate editing that left some plot lines hanging later.

Watched The Hills Have Eyes a couple hours ago. SPOILER ( SKIP IF YOU DON:T WANT TO KNOW)

Basically the exact same film as Wrong Turn;

To summarize quickly,

Desert. 1960's. Nuclear arms testing. Stubborn Family gets poisoned. Become deformed mutants. Flash to 2006. Family going on trip. Bad directions. Wire trap in sand. Tires Blow. Men leave women in R.V. Dad dies. Mutants attack RV. Daughter gets raped. Mom dies saving daughter. Dog 1 killed. Older Sister dies saving mom and baby. Brother gets gun. Sister's husband goes on a killing spree to get his baby back. Kills many mutants. Gets really messed up. Saves baby. Dog 2 saves guys life many times. Brother/younger sister set traps. Blow up R.V. Baby saved. sisters husband goes back to Brother/sister.
The end.

It is just another gory horror film.. with a repetitve plot. I actually swore quite a few times out loud because I was so angry at the Typical Horror Rules being broken.
Someone really needs to make a Scary movie.. that is really good :biggrin1:

I watched Prime (with Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman) GREAT FUCKING MOVIE!!! Very funny.

My parents said Jarhead was vulgar trash, but they're not qualified to give an opinion. They've seen maybe 4 movies since 1980. It's not due back until Wednesday. I'll let you know what I think when I get a chance to watch it.

I've also rented Good Nigh & Good Luck, but haven't been able to watch it yet.

Good Night & Good Luck was awesome, and strangely relevant to the current political situation.

Jarhead was a total waste of money and time. Even with Jake (in the best shape of his life) jumping around in a santa hat and thong, it was still a waste. It was also pretty vulgar, but I imagine that's not far from real life in the Marines.

Thank You for Smoking (2005)

Saw a sneak preview of this shit. Dark comedy. Not laugh out loud at all times, but it was witty. The main character murdered the movie. Brody had a 5-minute scene but represented and Rob Lowe was a riot. Holmes' sex scene was in it, but *gasp* to that broad.
