I heard that women are more likely to get UTIs because they have a shorter urethra.
Why is this? I'd expect that a longer one (in males) has more space for bacteria to grow, while a shorter one is easier to 'drain' after peeing.

During sex bodily fluids and bacteria are kinda shoved up in her urethra. It 's why urination after sex is a good idea. Helps clean that stuff out. The urethra lives in a moist, dark place, where bacteria can grow more easily. Also, I suspect it has to do with pH changes introduced by the semen.

The bladder is what actually gets infected. The urethra's just the path the bacteria take to get there. The shorter the trip, the higher the chances the bacteria will make their way through.

Ugh UTI's...

Frequent sex doesn't usually bother me but it's hot tubbing or soaking in a bathtub that'll bring them on quicker than I can even remember how much they suck!

Right?! That's why I always drink cranberry juice, not only do I enjoy the taste (oddly, it's pretty bitter but I like it) but it's really good for the whole pisser system:wink:

The urethra can become irritated as a result of many things. Anything that changes the PH balance can cause infection; the causes can be anything from semen to conditions such as diabetes. The best defense is a regularly flushing the urethra; drinking at least 6-8 glasses of water per day. If a woman thinks/knows something "foreign" has been in the area, urinating soon thereafter and drinking extra water is recommended. It has nothing to do with draining the urethra it the change in the PH that causes the problem. While we do see it in little girls after bubble baths, the real cultprit is the acidic nature of the soap. The vagina has a base PH, so anything that is an acid PH can throw the balance off and when that happens, you experience anything from irritation to a full blow infection. An infection should never go untreated as there can be some quite serious consequences.
