Should Aoc’s Green New Deal Consider Nuclear Energy? Why Doesn’t It?

The current blackouts in Texas reminded me that AOC’s Green New Deal doesn’t take nuclear energy into consideration for our future. I’ve seen some pretty high profile people, like Bill Gates and Beto O’Rourke, point out that what‘s going on in Texas could be prevented by developing nuclear energy. I realize that once you have nuclear you can never get rid of it because it takes forever to break down, but it is carbon free. Some countries like France are heavily dependent on nuclear.

Obviously a lot of people have safety concerns around nuclear, but isn’t that mostly fear-mongering? If we build new nuclear power plants and maintain them, safety shouldn’t be much of an issue. What happened at the nuclear power plant in Japan during the 2011 earthquake and tsunami was because it was old and not well-maintained.

I’m not saying things couldn’t go wrong, I just think the chances of things going wrong are really low if we take the right measures and implement safeguards.

Then if it turns out the only viable path forward includes nuclear power, I hope you're right.

I’d rather we invest more in other sources of energy, like wind, water and solar, but to become carbon neutral, I’m afraid nuclear must be considered.

There was nothing wrong with Texas 2 reactors other than they had not been winterized for prolonged sub zero temps. The cooling water froze forcing a shutdown.

Fukushima was well taken care of and operating fine. It was oh-so-safe. Until an earthquake and tsunami hit it.

Fast forward to now. It's still a problem that hasn't / can't be fixed.

They are all safe until they're not. So my vote is NO.

Instead of nuclear.......

How about the available solar panels with over 80% efficiency the world government doesn't want you to have?

Or that safe but awesome fusion generator?

Or one of my over unity generators?

Or the build-it-yourself ambient energy generators?

There's too many so much safer and easily doable alternatives to be had than nuclear.

"The Fukushima accident was, however, preventable. Had the plant’s owner, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), and Japan’s regulator, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA), followed international best practices and standards, it is conceivable that they would have predicted the possibility of the plant being struck by a massive tsunami. The plant would have withstood the tsunami had its design previously been upgraded in accordance with state-of-the-art safety approaches."

Most of America is "old and not well-maintained" or on it's way to being old and is only maintained since federal regulations mandate it (which republicans tend to run against) which is probably why nuclear power isn't championed by much of The Left/

It's not something that I would trust republicans taking over.

I'm not worried about a republican taking over a state with a lot of solar power since a solar spill is just a sunny day. :sun:

Those are good points. Maybe solidly blue states like New York, California, Washington, etc., should consider building their own nuclear power facilities then.

Both of those were preventable. The design of the reactors at Chernobyl was flawed to begin with. And both of those incidents took place decades ago. We have learned so much since then and technology has come along way. Bringing up Chernobyl and Three Mile Island IS fear mongering.

Preventable, yet it happened, so teaching about holocaust and hitler is fear mongering?

It was very preventable. Anytime you have earthquakes out in the ocean, you're going to have tsunamis and they knew that. So they had NO excuse not to be prepared for it. None.

I'm just glad the auto shutdown feature worked perfectly when Texas' 2 nuclear plants froze up recently. Still worries me, though.

Funny how a nuclear reactor can have too much cooling..........
