Attorneys, dear, attorneys. But the sentiment is still the same. The district judges are Title III - presidential appointees, whose appointment lasts until retirement or death. They cannot be fired, but can be impeached.

That's twice I've done that. No more posting after too much coffee. Sorry babe.

But your assessment that presidents playing political games with the judicial system is intolerable, is right on target. The fact that any previous president may have done it makes it neither right nor acceptable nor insignificant. Those are in the past, we need to concentrate on the present and the future.

But other presidents HAVEN'T done it, not in the midst of a term, and after positive reviews. I'm sick as FUCK of bushites bringing up things that are entirely different and they trying to claim they're the same thing. What's being done here is NEW and extra special. Now, if it weren't a republican doing it, how do you think they'd feel?

You and I get pissed when anyone does shit like this, but too many of the bushies only get pissed when "their guy" gets called on his shit. It's fucking retarded.

I'm anxiously awaiting to see what happens; why george was willing to let AG AG testify, but not Karl or Harriet or their aides; what george plans to do if the subpoenas are issued (one of his statements sounded like a (very) thinly veiled threat).

What I'd like to see is someone make a nice list of all of bush's cronies and their list of crimes, convictions and felonies. Then perhaps we should seriously look at ways to reduce, and eventually eliminate cronyism from our government, for everyone. (yes, that means non-partisan, for the excruciatingly slow)

Yep. People should start placing bets on not if, but when Gonzales will step down after this past week. His chief of staff answered Congress' questions in a manner that blatantly contradicts Gonzales. The aide even said that "some of the Atty General's statements have not been very truthful".

I'll be charitable in my opinion. Gonzales seems like a nice man, but his allegiance appears misguided. He either (1) truly had no strong knowledge fo the attorney firings, which means that he's an incompetent manager or (2) he knew about these affairs than he's admitting to Congress. All this talk about executive privilege and confidentiality is a muddling of the point - were these attorneys arbitrarily dismissed for political reasons. These attorneys received favorable reviews and none of them were told that their performance needed to improve, if their performance was suspect. A few of these attorneys did receive veiled or threatening calls from members of Congress when confronted about how the attorneys planned to handle particular prosecutions.

Gonzales should step down anyway at this point b/c his credibility is shot. How is one to affect change without credibility, both to Congress and credibility within one's department.

I do feel sorry for Gonzales, though. It looks as though he inherited a mess from Harriet Meiers and Karl Rove. He just can't implicate them. Gonzales is using the classic "fall guy tactic"; unfortunatly, while throwing someone else under the bus or out of the plane, he forgot to cut his own tether.

Why should Gonzales step down? He is vintage Bush. He fits in very well with this incompetent, corrupt administration we have had now for six years. Does anyone really think Bush will appoint a replacement that is bright and competent with pristine credentials and stay that why while working for The Bush Administration?

But then all incompetent corrupt Bushites could resign? Oh that would be a problem. The entire Bush Administration would be gone.

I have a hard time feeling sorry for Alberto Gonzalez. Yes, he may have inherited a shitty situation, and he may have only done his master's bidding. Nonetheless, he has seemed only too willing to eviscerate the Consitution and to justify things like torture and holding prisoners indefinitely without trial.

I had posted exactly this a few pages ago in this thread. The names being branded about as a possible replacement for the Attorney General are down right scary. I am mostly concerned with former solicitor general Ted Olsen as the most likely replacement. Now that would be a disaster.

I agree with you 100% on this one! The entire BA is just full of BS and I am so glad the majority of my fellow citizens in the USA have finally seen through all the smokescreens this administration has be sending for the last 6 years!!
