Should I worry about this? Could porn be banned in america?

Ban all porn you say...

I mean, they tried to ban alcohol a long ago, did not work. They tried infinite times to ban prostitution, did not work. They try to ban drugs everywhere all the time, does not work.
They can write all the laws they want, they cannot stop it.

And about the fact of people proposing that law and getting a significant support, just talks about how puritan and how disconnected with reality all those people are.

So I would not worry about the law itself

The Republican party, the party that just keeps giving.

Honestly I would not worry too much about it. They will talk about it, preach about it, get on their high horses and scream it from the rooftops but it just isn't going to happen.

Listen, there is argument for and against many things. My son is an science information grad of many years pas with an AI masters.

Yeah, I know nothing, but you and I know hacking is rife on the web. I've said the web has yet to see a huge crash...he laughs :) But if you've been around a while, everything has it's day of reckoning.

I reckon the web will have it's day when free thinking AI finds it's way onto the web, whether by accident or purpose, it will happen. At the speed of light the web will change overnight. The only way to stop it is pull the plug.

Some things in this life last forever. From my way of viewing things it's usually a 30 year period where things either show it will last a lifetime, or fail. The web is showing it's weaknesses, has been creaking around the edges for some time, well, from day one it's been spam...........yet, no matter how many blocks, it still appears. It's been a patch here, patch there to stop a leaky boat. But hey....what do I know.

Porn was getting very difficult to see when it was delivered by the post office. It was violation to send images by mail. The internet changed all that. Now as big corporate gets in volved some gets removed (Tumblr) but that creates opportunities for a smaller company to fill the gap. As long as the Supreme Court keeps upholding freedom of speech it only makes it more available between consenting parties.

I don't see how you joke about this, this is a serious threat to our freedoms,
Ok, if you say so. Thinking one moral crusading politician trying to score points in the Culture Wars will get enough support to ban all porn everywhere in America is the same "the sky is falling" rhetoric the supporters in this guy's party buy into when Republicans claim all guns will be banned. Neither is in jeopardy, but it gets the voters to turn out...so that's all that matters.

Porn, much like guns, are too entrenched into daily society to think the genie can be put back into the bottle, especially given the question of what constitutes porn? Just pictures of naked people online in general or does it have to be sexually explicit in some way? Will books and magazines (what little are still around) be banned too? What about artwork? WWI & II French postcards? Will it just be recent depictions of naked people and existing ones (like the aforementioned art) be grandfathered in? If not, will the government purge all Greek and Roman statues that show a breast or penis?

You see the how ridiculous it seems, especially given even the SCOTUS could not definitely describe what obscenity actually is. Not to even mention right-wingers and red states are some of the biggest consumers and users of porn, so I doubt he'd find much support even among his own voters.

Besides, I've got enough porn saved up to last a lifetime. When it comes to our freedoms, I'm much more concerned about the continued assault on women's reproductive rights, worker's rights, lack of universal access to healthcare and fragile nature of democracy recently exposed by elements in our government and their supporters to end it and replace it with a theocratic authoritarian state, then I am about no longer being able to see nekid pics. I've followed politics long enough to know when a congress critter is just mouthing off for attention and when there is a serious threat. It's all about priorities, so I choose to devote my energy and outrage elsewhere.

Republicans pretend that they're all righteous while pornhub revealed that in red states the highest genre of porn watched was cuckold porn followed by transgender porn.

They're a bunch of repressed lunatics. Maybe if they were worried less about who everyone else is fucking they'd stop being so miserable

It won't be able to be stopped, it will probably be able to be tracked though. Gathering information is more valuable to authorities than banning it.

I am amused that the government there is more worried about a nation of wankers rather than a nation of gun owners :joy:

Max
That would be funny if it wasn't so true, the right to bear arms is more important than the right to bash one out.
It's the Republicans who are wankers, even the women.

People said the same thing about roe v wade though, when people woud worry about it being possibly overturned, there would be people online mocking their fears akin to thinking "the sky is falling", and now we live in a post roe america and many wo.en are rightfully frightened,

I'm sorry, but the it ain't happening angle has been played already, the far right have made it known that they are a threat to our freedoms,

So I don't believe I'm worng for fearing of what they might do,

Especially with a conservative supreme court,

i hope and pray that you are right though, it should never be up to politicians to determine if I can look at naked consenting adults or not,

You go right on thinking a blanket ban on all porn and naked pictures is just right around the corner because of one elected theocratic trying to appeal to his fundie base and reported on a website maybe ten people a day visit.

Those who try to ban certain things (mainly the fundies and their far-right enablers in government and the media) don't realize how actually entrenched certain things are in our society to the point cracking too hard down on them would cause national disruption. The often times demonized trifecta of drugs, immigration and porn/sex work are woven into the fabric of our monetary system to the point a total ban on any of them would cause economic harm across multiple spectrums. Despite the hostility to them by rabid antis, they are a "necessary evil".

Do you really the think the majority of Americans (the majority of whom consume porn) would be ok with this? Do you really think there wouldn't be pushback from multi-million-dollar industries who profit from porn (including this website)? Even most political conservatives who generally claim they are for freedom of speech (as long as it is an issue they care about), I think would agree porn in general falls under the protection of the first amendment.

So, not only do I think there is no "slippery slope" argument to the concern of porn banning, but to equate it with women's reproductive rights is disingenuous. There is a vast difference between a person's "right" to see dicks and boobs and one's bodily sovereignty and banning one will inconvenience a jerk off session, while banning the other will inconvenience your entire life forever and maybe even end your life itself as dozens of cases since the SCOTUS decision are already showing. To compare the two on the same level I think is rather insulting to a generation of pro-choice activists who fought for reproductive rights and to the current ones who are fighting to get them back.
