because it's compulsory for men, and it's the 21st c.

the military will continue to be 100% voluntary so i look at the SS registration as symbolic more than anything , so it shou'ndt be a big deal to add women to the registry, but it's still stuck in the 1950s.

It's the 21st century in Spain as well and it's not compulsory for anybody... since 2001.

oh i totally agree,

i know men wrote those rules but men also wrote the rules for corporate america and the rules that excluded women from voting, that didn't stop women from coming along and changing those rules! there are several hawkish women in the senate who could introduce a bill changing that but they dont', it's like its untouchable. and it's not a question u hear much about

i was going to flame u but u totally redeemed urself in your next paragraph. you and i don't have an argument.

and the best way to knock down discrimination against women in the military is to be there in numbers ...get goin girls.

happy christmas.

LMAO -- whew I dodged that bullet, huh?? LOL, good, I don't want you to flame me, or argue, you're too damn cute!

So, the only little, tiny, really, bitty thing I have to say is...well, corporate America??? lol, how many women do you really think get past that glass ceiling.

And joining the military? When you're treated as second class citizens? A joke? Someone they HAVE to have in there? Sigh....nah, not for me. I have a huge amount of respect for men and women in the service, heck, a lot of my friends are in, talk about dodging a bullet, but really, it's just not a place for women, with the higher ups standing behind these limitations to women. You can do this, but not that. Why? Because you're a woman. Ughghghg! Nope, not for me.

:biggrin1: I am so off my soap box. Whew...and you all wanted more women in here? Geesh, I bet you regret that question now!!!lmao

Well, Spain and your military is under the guidance of the king, ie, the Commander and Chief of the military, our President is the same thing, but I thought (mainly joking with you) that as a King he would have the say so with who serves and when, how...unlike the American President...

mostly, Bardak I was kidding. :)

Sorry if I sounded a bit harsh! I didn't mean it... Still trying to express myself in English fluently!

In Spain, the King doesn't have a word in any legislation measures. He's just... someone who lives for free, basically :biggrin1:
It's actually the Parliament, and therefore, the government who decides what the army does or doesn't (Ministry of Defence).

Should women be in the military?
Women are in the military, which will continue without question.
Should there be some revision to guidelines like the pregnancy thing, sure. However, the fact that there's an attempt to keep women on active duty, even by way of draconian measures, proves they are an essential part of the American military.

As explained to me by a recently retired Army ranger: The fear is that women will more easily crack under pressure when taken prisoner. A woman can be beaten and raped into telling confidential, top secret military information. Also, because a woman is physically weaker she will not be as effective in hand to hand combat.
Ranger or not, those arguments are such bullshit. There are slim, 5'4" men serving in the military, is anyone keeping them from the front lines?

Additionally, there are more women beaten and raped by their fellow service people than have been by any enemy forces and that's with women acting in combat duty right now. Somehow, they do not crack and continue to serve with honor even while the system fails, and/or punishes, them when reporting these crimes.

Also, as we have seen from Abu Ghraib, Vietnam, and there are narratives which discuss the same activities in previous wars, men are as subject to rape and sexual torture as women. It merely is taboo to discuss it. However, it happens and gender is no indication to predisposition to "breaking". If there's a real concern, send everyone to enhanced SERE school before they see combat and call it a day.

well spain doesn't need a military because the US has one.

nobody expects spain to be able to defend itself if russia attacks, of course the US would intervene.

spain can't support the industrial military complex necessary to battle superpowers, or even the girl scouts for that matter....

j/k i luv spain u have great beaches.

Fortunately I'm too old to be drafted. :biggrin1: Unless Issey Miyake and Ralph Lauren start designing uniforms you can forget about girls like me enlisting. :biggrin1:

There was a larger question involved that too many people could not get to because they couldn't get past an apparently provocative post title: "Should women be in the military?"

Some of you couldn't ever possibly get hired as editors at a newspaper/newsite.

Definitive proof that women are a liability for the armed services and therefore national security???

General Backs Off on Threat to Court Martial Pregnant Soldiers - ABC News

While legal and military experts said the order was proper, a spokeswoman for the National Organization for Women called it "ridiculous."
"How dare any government say we're going to impose any kind of punishment on women for getting pregnant," NOW President Terry O'Neill said. "This is not the 1800s."
Watch "World News with Diane Sawyer" this evening for more on Maj. Gen. Anthony Cucolo's restriction on pregnancy in Iraq.
She said NOW would seek to have Cucolo's order rescinded, and would turn to Defense Secretary Robert Gates and even President Obama for help. "Applying this criteria is intended to promote thoughtful and responsible behavior," Cucolo told ABC News today. "I wanted all my soldiers to think before they act, before they make a personal choice that has consequences."

I love how NOW (National Organization for Women) gets a veto on military prerogatives.

Will gays too be the liability the armed forces say they will be?

How about this...
Since it's apparent that certain people want to blame everyone who is different as the problem, how about if all women, homosexuals and minorities packed their bags in Iraq & Afghanistan and came home? That would leave all of the so-called "appropriate people" there to do the job and show everyone else how it's done. Since women may get pregnant, minorities are supposed to be lazy (and believe me that comment, although it hasn't been made yet, is just around the corner), and all homosexuals are just there to suck a dick, then perhaps if our Armed Forces were just a bunch of heterosexual waspy types we'll answer all of our Nation's problems including finishing the "War on Terror"?

If you're not willing to do this, then talking about who's a "liability" is absolute nonsense. Don't play yourself out with this thread, spike.

How about you take the points of the articles and deconstruct them (i.e. minimize the invalid points), then reconstruct work arounds (or ideas) that address valid points.

Works better than being marginally ad hominem.
