If the Republicans have NO scruples about calling Obama a socialist -- could somebody please give me a good definition of "fascist"??
I think I posted this on another thread somewhere - the memory gets fuzzy sometimes - but here goes:

Fascism is a radical, far-right, authoritarian, totalitarian, nationalist system which embraces the idea that nations should be run by corporations which each - in theory - represent the interests of their respective economic sectors. In practice, this means that the nation is run by non-elected officials, and the purpose of the (limited) government is to further the goals of the corporations.

FDR put it this way:

"The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism — ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power."

Maybe were too busy on here instead of writing our useless elected officals. ALL gov is out of control and has been for twenty five years or more. Nothing more than criminals, all of them.

I just hope that our military stands behind us like the Egytian military did for the people there, Because that day is coming. An all out failure of government is responsible for this mess, embarrassing us and the people who are risking their lives right now over seas.

I don't think we'll have a hard time convicing them to stand behind us when that day comes and it will. Take that to the bank.

You're reaching the limits of how wrong one person can be in a single post.

Facsism, as a philosophy, has:
1) Nothing to do with corporations.
2) No entity rules of the government
3) The individual is subservient to the state and no one else
4) The leader is all powerful

Here is a good definition if you wish to open your mind (I sincerely hope your definition was a joke):

Characteristics of Fascist Philosophy
Fascism, especially in its early stages, is obliged to be antitheoretical and frankly opportunistic in order to appeal to many diverse groups. Nevertheless, a few key concepts are basic to it. First and most important is the glorification of the state and the total subordination of the individual to it. The state is defined as an organic whole into which individuals must be absorbed for their own and the state's benefit. This "total state" is absolute in its methods and unlimited by law in its control and direction of its citizens.
A second ruling concept of fascism is embodied in the theory of social Darwinism. The doctrine of survival of the fittest and the necessity of struggle for life is applied by fascists to the life of a nation-state. Peaceful, complacent nations are seen as doomed to fall before more dynamic ones, making struggle and aggressive militarism a leading characteristic of the fascist state. Imperialism is the logical outcome of this dogma.
Another element of fascism is its elitism. Salvation from rule by the mob and the destruction of the existing social order can be effected only by an authoritarian leader who embodies the highest ideals of the nation. This concept of the leader as hero or superman, borrowed in part from the romanticism of Friedrich Nietzsche, Thomas Carlyle, and Richard Wagner, is closely linked with fascism's rejection of reason and intelligence and its emphasis on vision, creativeness, and "the will."

Well guys (and any gals that have responded) -- I appreciate the input on the question........but listening to some of the arguments tonite on TV -- I'm even a little more confused than I was before.

The TEA party people are calling for a shut-down of the government because..........."we have no business, when we're soooooooooo far in debt, spending our tax money for planned parenthood." Well -- if you're going to argue particulars --- when we're this far in debt we also have no business giving corporations (making great profits) Federal Tax dollars as subsidies!!

And any body got statistics as to how "much" in taxlars is spent funding NPR, planned parenthood, etc. over against the Corporate "Wealth"fare is costing us.

It seems to me when you weigh "making your social agenda points" over against the consequences of shutting down the government --- well --- God help the next conservative friend who sends me an e-mail telling me how unpatriotic I am if I don't "support" the troops -- while THEIR party is fully prepared to just deny them their paychecks and literally stop "supporting" them -- all over --------- abortion?? If the Republicans have NO scruples about calling Obama a socialist -- could somebody please give me a good definition of "fascist"??

I believe it was in yesterday's NYTimes where, among other tid bits on public spending, that PBS received $420 million last year in tax money and Liberty University, the evangelical private Christian school founded by dead apartheid-supporting bigot Jerry Falwell, received $445 million in federal financial aid last year. That's a lot of PELL grants.

A Billionaire, a Tea-party guy and a Democrat are at a table with a dozen donuts in a box sitting on it.

The Billionaire takes 11 of the dozen and starts of the door.

As he leaves he turns to the Tea-party guy and says "better keep your eye on that Democrat, he's gonna take a piece of your donut."

Absolutely brilliant. This also applies to Swiss politics.

Only someone who is either thoroughly misinformed or blinded by their own political beliefs to consider the facts would blame Democrats or Obama if the government shuts down on Friday. Note to GOP... if you expect to have a prayer come 2012, put your teabagging ideologues in check.
Is there any way of rolling over the current budget levels, so things can function until a new budget is agreed (the EU had to do this fairly recently)? Would seem better than grinding to a halt.

Also, if there is a shutdown, will it backfire on the Republicans in the form of some sort of backlash for forcing it?

The US system has worked. Budget agreed with a whole 90 minutes spare. That's not even close!

The key point now is that the US now has a budget with planned tax, spend and borrowing. The figures add up. By contrast the nations of the EuroZone and the EU have unplanned budgets with borrowing out of control. Three small economies now have derailed (Greece, Ireland, Portugal) while a large economy (Spain) is likely to follow. How ever unhappy Democrats and Republicans are with the budget they've now got (and I think both are unhappy) it is better than the EuroZone mess.

These days I've been calling the teahadists what they really are... REPUBLICANS. Referring to them as a "Tea Party" (or any form of) insists that they're somehow different, and all of the "teabaggers" in Congress now ran under the Republican title and received the majority of their campaign funding from the usual Conservative sources. If they really were a different party, they would have ran as the Independents that they pretend to be.

I honestly don't care what comes out of their mouths. I follow the money, and it all looks like an (R) to me.

Not only did the government NOT shut down, it will probably function better due to the debate. While i dont favor all the $38 billion in cuts, i do favor some of it. Most importantly, womens health clinics remain open and will continue to perform abortions for those who want them. Also, the EPA will continue to be able to fine polluters and provide needed oversight for our environment. The GOP failed miserably to prevent either event from happening. Now the big battle over the debt ceiling begins.
