Silvio Berlusconi will need weeks of treatment after Milan attack

    A few thoughts on this:
    • Berlusconi was NOT adequately protected
    • Allegedly the attacker is mentally ill
    • Since when is mental illness an excuse for violence & bad behavior
    • Is this what is now meant by criminally insane?
    • The country that invented the Villar-Perosa aircraft submachine gun and the Beretta92F should be able to protect it's elected politicians better than this. Even if he is a putz.

Our leaders need to be accessible to the public from time to time and there is nothing that can stop an attacker if it happens out of the blue. It is a downside to being a leader or a public spokesperson that you are a viable target to anyone who fancies themselves an assassin.

    Accessible, yes. Attackable, no.

I hated George W. Bush; but I was pissed when that guy threw a shoe at him. I think when you reach that level of importance you deserve to know that someone or a group of someones are watching your ass and will take a bullet, brogan, or marble statue for you.

I still maintain "that the country that invented the Villar-Perosa aircraft submachine gun and the Beretta92F should be able to protect it's elected politicians better than this."

Politicians routinely disregard the advice of their security teams. I'd bet the Premier was glad handing against the wishes the Italian SS. Look at what happening to Kennedy and Bhutto. Both of them were not following the advice of the people suppose to be protecting them. In Bhutto case she was extremely foolish to be standing up in that car.

Sometimes violence is the only way to get through to some people, regardless of the title bestowed upon them. Whuz the big deal? Barack seems to agree (as long as it's not an American, right?)

Yes, I had seen her do the same thing in news footage a few days before her assassination and thought she seemed arrogant as opposed to self-assured.

It was in the papers again today, and it looks a lot worse than I'd realised. Poor ol' Silvio.
It wasn't Romano Prodi who chucked the milan thing, was it? :p

I agree with both of you. I kinda felt Bhutto was an accident waiting to happen - it's almost like she courted it. :S

They only thing Silvio should have been hit with is a paternity suit.

If you have ever been around any Head of State (HOS), you can see there is an aura, at least in their minds, of invincibility. Clearly Mr. Berlusconi's aura is not invincible, as it was not even a match for flying mini Milanese cathedral.

There is always a natural tension between the security forces assigned to guard heads of state, and their political team. Unfortunately when the political team wins, often the HOS, and country loose. The Prime Minister is lucky to escape with only minor injuries.

How do you propose security forces adaquately protect leaders so that they are accessible but not attackable? Short of making them walk around wearing a bullet-proof glass bubble there is only limited options for security guards.

I think we should just let Putin take over Italy. Nobody's gonna fuck with Putin.

I did wonder if it was some aggrieved bloke whose wife had been hit on by ol' Silvio, lol.

PS: Cool new name Principessa. ;)

I find this fascinating, in what way is Silvio Berlusconi objectively more important than me or you ? Why does he deserve a level of protection from attack that no one is offering me or you ?

He's certainly not a better person than you or me, he's certainly not more vital or irreplaceable. So why should he get enough protection of his person to prevent a random loony from attacking him which you or I do not have ? Is his life and person worth more than yours or mine ?

It should have been Joe Lieberman.
