Since America has gone down the toilet, where would be a good place to live?!?

No matter where you go...there you are! Food for thought though is perhaps getting involved in helping turn things around here. The Bush administration is not going to be around forever.
Whatever it is you don't like you can make a difference if you put some thought and work into it.

I'll agree with that. Come the next election, they might be slightly less thuggish... the governments at the state level are actually rather decent and there is at least some level of public debate and accountability... but no doubting there are some thugs at the federal level right now.

I have lived in both countries and love Australia. It has to be one of the best places to live in the world but at the end of the day it's still run by the same thugs that run your country.

I can't imagine fleeing the country but if I had to I would go to Northern Italy. Camucia, Cortona, or Arezzo are all lovely towns with nice people and great food.

I've heard good things about Spain from friends who have lived there. I liked Portugal when I visited, but I haven't spent an appreciable amount of time there.

The issues I think about when considering where to live are language, lifestyle accessibility, and climate. On that basis, New Zealand seems nice. Not too hot in summer, not too cold in winter, relatively sane government, beautiful topography. Fairly liberal social policies. Religion doesn't seem to play a huge role in politics. Reasonably high per capita GNP (extreme poverty is no fun to be in, or observe). I'd love to hear from some Kiwis who are able to confirm or refute these impressions.

My partner and I decided before the last election that if the Dems didn't gain a majority in at least one house of congress there was no hope and we would begin actively planning how to get out. Now we figure we have a couple of extra years, maybe more.
To BD and your ilk, it's still a sort of free country and one of my freedoms is to criticise. Patriotism, nationalism, and blind loyalty are different concepts.

In terms of where to go, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Scandanavia seem attractive

To add another proviso, we have thugs, but they're mainly secular thugs still , apart from Tony Abbprat.

I'll agree with that. Come the next election, they might be slightly less thuggish... the governments at the state level are actually rather decent and there is at least some level of public debate and accountability... but no doubting there are some thugs at the federal level right now.

Nt suster moved there several years ago. Everything said about New Zealand seems to be backed up by my sister. Wonderful place to live and/or visit.

Exactly!! During Bush's first administration, I actively considered the question of where to migrate. When I went abroad - England, France, Hong Kong, among a few places - I gave the issue serious consideration and tried to picture fitting in here. While I respect and could probably adapt to life in other nations, I ultimately decided that you still can't easily replace certain American values that have made this nation great....(No, I'm not talking about pie-in-the-sky ideals). The notions of human rights and ethical standards, for example, are not as well-established in other countries as they are here. The American judicial system and the American notion of enterprise are hard to find and develop elsewhere.

The big issue is beign mature enough to face our biggest problems - the natioanl debt, health care, etc - and to truly invest in the future. Ever since Ronald Reagan's administration, the wealth and heritage of this nation have just been exploited and squandered. If we re-instill notions of civic duty and stewardship, there is still a hope to steer the US in the right direction.

I hear Greenland is nice this time of year.

It was a lot nicer back when the earth was a bit warmer, eight or nine centuries ago. It's still a tad cold for any "get back to the land" stuff.

Speaking of Greenland, it's warming up nicely: washingtonpost.com

I've been wanting to retire in New Zealand for some time now. So yeah, I would move there in a heartbeat. Too bad Hawaii can't spin off as an independent protectorate or something.

I would recomend New Zealand. It has every thing; mountains, beaches. Just look at all the types of geography in "The Lord of the Rings" triology. All of it shot in NZ. I have been there twice for a few months at a time. I love it. Plus it is pretty progressice country. They allow gay marriage and are non nuclear. NZ even prohibited the USA from docking there nuclear subs there, in keeping with their no nukes policy. Plus their Prime Minister Hellen Clark is a total closeted lesbian. It is my favorite country in the world. :biggrin1:

The premise is daft. Rant on if you will. You still have a great nation, and although discouraged by 9/11 and the mess in Iraq, you have to take a longer view.

Remember JFK. "Ask not what...

Almafie is nice this time of year.

A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
