Well, True Blood is still going on, so I'd start with Six Feet Under. Both are amazing shows, but SFU is by far the better one. If you start watching it, you've got to watch all five seasons - even during the slow parts in season four and five, it has the most amazing ending. Well worth it!

Can't say which is better as I've never seen True Blood. SFU has the most complexly developed characters of any TV show. They actually grow, develop, regress, and change as time goes on. There's a great deal of inner dialogue that you'll hear without any character saying it. As you go through the seasons, you'll find yourself regarding the characters as real because any of them could be real people outside your TV screen. SFU really capitalizes on the strengths of the television medium in a way very few shows do.

SFU is not a good show to digest all at once. You have to think and consider what's happened in each episode (again, a strength of a programmed TV format). As to the last episode, it's extraordinary but it will only mean anything to you if you've watched the entire thing and come to know the characters well. The last 10 minutes are astonishing.

Never saw True Blood, but was a huge fan of SFU. I'd go with SFU.

Not a fan of vampire shows, so I'd definitely recommend Six Feet Under. Well written, well acted, believable (even the quasi-supernatural segments). Very enjoyable.
