ByronTexas: I was reading the March 2004 issue of Men's Health magazine and noticed this on Page 168 ("Sexy Little Numbers") --

Number of men who've compared their endowment
with that of a male porn star: 2 in 3

Size of the average male porn star's
    erect penis: 8 inches

The average guy's size: 5.8 inches

I don't think they mean compared in person. I think they mean men who make comparisons with what they see in movies when describing their cocks, such as boasting "I'm as big as so-and-so."

Men's Health is basically a great publication. Upon its debut, I can't recall ever having any other magazine just like it---one catered to specifically to men's interests health, lifestyles, sports, men's social etiquette, dating tips, clothing trends, etc.. Personally though, I have always snickered about the magazine's handling and addressing of matters about the penis. 'Seems it oftentimes deliberately avoids elaborate "discussions" about the phallus subject and typically downplays the significance of "size" for its readers. This makes sense, too. Men's Health must appeal to the MASSES...meaning typical (average!) men. This is another great lesson to us here....the subject of a big penis doesn't correlate (statistically) to the common every day Joe. The cited 5.8 inches as "the (published) average guy's size" seems just about right from all reports we keep hearing about. As to men "comparing themselves" to porn stars dimensions, that would HAVE to be from a mental "sizing up" from having viewed either internet pix or videos. Afterall, very few (everyday) men would ever have occasion to "whip it out" and literally measure up to a porn star in person. Most men would never do so, anyway--let alone admit to it...IF they ever had.

    Doesn't mean they wouldn't be curious! ;)

I agree that they don't mean compared in person, but I was thinking they mean compared as in they watched porn movies and mentally thought about how they stack up with the "actors." But that's just my take--could be wrong.

I agree with benderten that I notice that Men's Health and other men's magazines, when addressing penis size, which they often do, obviously play toward the masses. Another example was an article in Maxim a few years ago on picking the right condom size. They advised putting your erection through a toilet paper roll to see if it fit loosely, just right, or tightly. They stated that you should be able to fit into the tube "unless you are a porn star." Yeah, right. :)

I really doubt the average porn star is that big. Granted, there are some guys like Mandingo and Lexington Steele that are really big, but I'll bet the vast majority of them are seven or less.

If most guys saw what their dick looked like in a petite woman's hands through a camera a foot away, they'd realize they stack up pretty well.

As for the Men's Health writers' proclivity for targetting the 'average' guy, it may be because the great majority of the writers themselves are 'average.'

    Therefore, they think 'average.'

I'd like to be a fly on the wall when the editor wants an article written from the 'hung' guy's perspective...

"Hey, you! Find me a writer with a big dick!"

How the heck do they go about finding out who on the staff qualifies? :D

    Writers about disease are ill-literate.

I don't think the editors of men's health, or any similar magazine, would ever ask for an article from the "hung guy's perspective." Such articles, be they real or fake, abound in porn and soft porn.  Rather, the object of mens health and lifestyle magazines is to make men feel good about themselves.  If the magazine targets an average man as their audience, the editor will try to flatter the average man.  Consider the following excerpt from the sex tips column in the current on-line edition of Men's Health, which suggests measuring your cock as a way to arouse yourself and your girlfriend:

    " FUN WITH NUMBERS
    Measure Your Penis
The best way to gauge penis size is to measure yourself as a urologist would.

Flaccid length: Measure immediately after undressing, since a cold or warm room can cause shrinkage or expansion. Do it while standing, and use a flexible ruler. Position the tip of the ruler gently against the point where the shaft meets your abdomen. Then bend the ruler along the shaft and read the length. Average: 3.43 inches

Erect length: Immediately after you become fully hard, measure along the top of your erection from the base of the shaft to the tip. Average: 5.03 inches

Girth: While still erect, wrap a cloth tape measure around your penis at its base. Average: 5.14 inches around; 1.67 inches in diameter

Erection angle: Stand with your back against a wall and estimate your angle. A 0-degree erection (an oxymoron if we've ever heard one) would point at your feet; 90 degrees would point out in front; and 180 degrees would aim at your chin. Average: 105.7 degrees.
    "

(The full text appears at http://www.menshealth.com/cda/article/0,6916,s1-2-0-0-844,00.html )

While the average or typical cock size is a matter of debate, I hardly believe it is 5 inches, as the article claims.  I'm sure the writer knows this, but preferred instead to flatter his readers.

Consider the review of the Trojan Magnum condom (not even the Magnum XL) is a similar magazine, Men's Fitness:

    "Trojan Magnum Score: 2
He Said: I coulda been a contendah.
    She Said: You're deluding yourself.

I wish I could report that the extra large condoms - Magnum and Maxx - are my size, but they hang off me like loose fitting sweaters and all the sensitivity you'd expect  from a cardigan.  Somehow, the Magnum feels better than the Maxx.  My girlfriend says it's like having sex with a man possessed of shattered dreams.
    "

Really, come on!  The Magnum is only a few millimeters bigger than a regular condom, and the XL only a little bigger than that.  While every little bit helps, anyone with serious girth is still strangled in either one of these, and I have trouble believing that any normally developed adult male would be just lost in the rubber the way this writer describes!  Clearly, they are just trying to flatter anyone that even loosely fills these larger condoms.

They have them! Go to Condomania.com, and check out the "They Fit" condoms, which come in a wide range of widths and lengths. I got some size U22, and for the first time, I could feel someting other than pain and discomfort when fucking!

6inchwonder: I'm in that 'normal' range but have always considered myself small.

I'm about 6 inches long, not quite, and around 3 1/2 to 4 around.

    ORCABOMBER: I don't read men's magazines. :)

I have to say, that as already mentioned, they are catering to the average, and not just that, but to all.. I mean, it's hjard to please everyone at once when it comes to such matters, I mean, if they did go on about 12+ inchers, there'd be complaints either of "fakes" or something about men who are hung in a negative way, regardless.

There's a reason we're NOT in the majority media: we're not the majority.
