I'll probably be shouted at for saying this (by the clever clogs) but you are more at risk from heart disease than cancer due to smoking.

When i was a student nurse i did a stint on cardiac and the amount of patients on there who smoked was unbelievable. The consultants told me smoking is a massive factor in heart disease...i smoked at the time btw.I was scared i can tell you.

I agree with your comments. My father battled heart disease and he smoked quite a bit.
He developed Cancer later in life, but it was un-related to his lungs.
Cancer seems to pop up around 58-62 yrs of age. If you can make it through that period, your generally OK.
But...if your a smoker, your lungs are compromised on the ability to exchange oxygen, and your heart has to work that much harder to get the oxygen it needs.

Good luck in your quest to quit smoking. I would explore all avenues.
One that I heard of that's darn near Free -every time you want a cigarette, snap a rubber band on your wrist.
