Gee I think he knows smoking is bad for him. What do you think? Everybody and their mother knows smoking is bad for you. In any case, people telling you how bad something is/telling you to quit on an online forum isn't likely to make a difference. When I quit smoking with any regularity it was because I made that choice.
Yes....Yes....and Yes!!!!!!

You can afford money for cigarettes but can't afford $5 for a library card or food?

Sorry but I just can't find sympathy for you anymore.
I don't think he is looking for sympathy. He is using this forum as an outlet for his thoughts.

In some third world countries, some families spend 30% of their income or more on cigarettes and, as a result, have insufficient money to feed and clothe their children properly or send them to school. I saw that when I lived in Fiji (1994 - 2004).

In asking questions, I found that many people in Fiji thought that wealthy Americans were more likely to smoke than poor Americans. Of course I told them that the opposite was true, i.e., that smoking was most common among poor people and much less common among wealthy people.

A similar situation was once common with seat belts. When watching people leave office parks were people tended to be highly paid, I noted that the vast majority wore seat belts. When watching people leave factories, I noted that there were more people who did not wear seat belts.

You say you've not addicted to it. To determine for yourself whether you are addicted, try quitting for a couple days and see what happens.

I didn't say I'm not addicted. I said that's not why I smoke. If I (and other smokers) only had to deal with a physical addiction, quitting would be a piece of cake.

There is no defense for smoking other than you choose to.

This, plus this . . .

Unless you want to quit it won't happen. I agree you need to find another outlet but you have to make the choice to quit.

times 1000. Actually wanting to is kind of important. If you don't want to, it'll never happen.

I smoke around $125 worth a week - around 25-30 a day. Why haven't I quit yet? Because I like it.

Yes, I know it's bad for me. Yes, I know it costs me way more than I can afford. And I don't care. Because I'm not just addicted to it, I like it. If someone can find me something as fulfilling, I'll replace it. And no, eating lollies, chewing gum, exercise or any of the other 'replacements' don't work.

I smoke because I like it. And when your life sucks (mine doesn't right now, but has at times in the past), it can be the only good thing about your day.

Enjoy your smokes AM, even if you know you have reasons not to do it.

my dads brother smoke 4 packs a day and died at 60 my dad is 90 and never smoked.

you may not live to be a old women living like that.

do you have bad yellow teeth? your home stinks? you stink?

i want nothing to with you. i hate to see a women smoke.

My nan lived till she was 81. Incompetent doctors killed her by giving her medication that was incompatible with a congenital condition completely unrelated to smoking or the cardiovascular system. However, she smoked for the majority of her life and it certainly wasn't what killed her.

I can't make any comments on how you and your home smell, nor can I comment on what your teeth are like, as I haven't met you and am not impolite enough to jump to conclusions about someone I have never met.

It's really very lucky that you don't want anything to do with me, as I have no intentions of ever meeting you.

A bit of both . It costs $125 for 200. I smoke a little less than that each week.

People who have never enjoyed smoking, or who quit when they didn't enjoy it any more may never understand why those who DO enjoy it continue to smoke.

I have all respect for those like Nudeyorker who genuinely enjoy/ed it, but managed to quit anyway. You guys have done an amazing thing!

Smoking causes more problems than many smokers realize.

A few years before my mother had to quit smoking because she needed full-time oxygen, she, my sister, and I were visiting my brother in another city. Because my mother smoked, she could not stay at my brother's house nor could she share a hotel room with my sister. Also, her retirement apartment and car reeked of tobacco smoke. When my brother inherited a car, it stank so badly of tobacco smoke that he couldn't stand it.

Before smoking became socially unacceptable, there were few places where I could eat out. When I was out of town, I went to the hotel dining room and asked for the non-smoking area. When the hostess told me there was none, I asked her to ask the people in the dining room whether they would be smoking so that I could be seated in a smoke free area; there weren't many people in the dining room. When she said she couldn't do that, I said, "Well, I can." I walked around the dining room, asking, "Sir, will you be smoking?" and "Ma'am, will you be smoking?" I was able to find a place that would be smoke free. The hostess was extremely embarrassed. I pointed out that if they had a no smoking area (which they did a few years later, when the law forced them to) that I wouldn't have had to do that. I had to eat some place, and I did what I had to do to avoid being forced against my will to breathe smoke.

Because of my sensitivity to smoke, much of my life was spent finding ways to avoid it. Of course when organizations formed to require no smoking areas, I was among the first to join. It's too bad that at that time, it required legislation to enforce what should have been common courtesy.

We dare not back down. Before the World War I, smoking was dying out because of social disapproval. Then, General Pershing asserted that cigarettes were just as essential for the war effort as guns and ammunition and that soldiers could not be expected to fight without cigarettes. That made it unpatriotic to object to smoking and there was a resurgence of smoking. That could happen again if we fail to remain vigilant, so it is essential that we never back off on insisting on our right to breathe clean air, whether it is air free of tobacco smoke, coal smoke, Diesel smoke, burning leaves, or whatever.

I completely understand where AMouse is coming from. When I was in similar circumstances, I smoked (cigarettes were far cheaper back then). It made being hungry easier - it made everything easier, it seemed.

I'm an ex-smoker, but I love smoking. I love everything about it. The smell, the taste, the ritual of lighting up and the comraderie of the people one meets when forced to smoke outside. I was a considerate smoker - I never smoked indoors, and many people didn't even realize I was a smoker. On long car trips with non-smokers I was never the reason we had to pull over, etc.

I quit because I had to. Live or die. Period. So I quit. But everytime I hear a militant non-smoker speak, my urge to smoke almost goes through the roof. Whenever a man says 'I'll never date a smoker', I just want to smoke ONE cigarette in front of him.

Ok, now I have to go drink a glass of water, eat a carrot and think happy thoughts!

I have never smoked or have any intention to smoke. While I find it is something thats not really attractive to me, I do feel that smokers in this day an age are treatedly very poorly. I live in NY where the cig commericals pop up on tv all the time. Where places are selling cigs then telling them they can't smoke it anywhere and run programs suggesting smokers are a major bane on society. Still, nobody wants to ban it. I never grew up with smokers, don't hang around smokers and usually try to aviod it. And yes I knew a few people whose lives were complicated from the problems of smoking or it lead to their death. Yes, I belive its harmful, but we sell a lot of products (alcohol) that causes a lot of problems. I really think that we have to accept that cigs are a choice. If it's legal I don't think soceity needs to punish smokers the way it does now.

I really loved smoking too. Most of the time I smoked 1, maybe 2 cigarettes in one day. Had a bunch of awful happen over one weekend and I smoked over a pack in two days. I realized if I was going to up the quantity I smoked, I couldn't personally shrug off the larger amount of potential harm to my body. So I quit.

But everytime I hear a militant non-smoker speak, my urge to smoke almost goes through the roof. Whenever a man says 'I'll never date a smoker', I just want to smoke ONE cigarette in front of him.

I don't like people who are arseholes about smoking OR people who are arseholes about how nobody should smoke ever/any smoker should quit. That kind of behavior like you described makes me feel the same way...

I used to smoke, but I was never addicted - I just really enjoyed a cigarette with a drink on a night out or on holiday. I found it pleasurable. I never smoked in the house or anything though, because it wasn't the same and I didn't 'need' to. I haven't had a cigarette for probably about 10 years, but I do fancy one now and then.

i will like to lock 100 smokers in to a small room with no air vents and give them all the cigs thay want.

I understand people not wanting to be around smokers. I can understand that people are really against smoking. What i don't understand is why people are so damn emo about it. Did you give this statement any thought what so ever before you typed it up?

Yep, equating smoking with the depression. I have gum, mints, etc. I love my hot cinnamons like cinnamon altoids, 5 Flare Gum, etc, but it's not just the oral fixation, it's the taste. Ashes in my mouth.

/Could be worse, could be Swishers or some other Uber narsty Cigar........

swishers or white owls arent cigars, theyre big cigarettes.

cigars are way better than cigarettes.

Just an observation; One of the things that I've been doing lately, for a variety of reasons, is smoking cigarettes. Lately, It seems like I've just been sitting in my hotel room, which is more akin to a studio apartment, watching reruns of CSI and Criminal Minds; Chicago White Sox Baseball, (The Cubs suck, always have sucked, and always will suck) and smoking cigarettes.

Yes, I know it's a nasty habit, yes, I know it's bad for me, yes, I know it's expensive, yes, I know people don't like it, but somehow, it seems to fit my mood. I've fucked up my life, and all I have is ashes, so the taste of the cigarettes seems to fit.

BTW, here, in the Northwest Corner of Indiana, Air Pollution Playground, Cigarettes are "only" about $5.00 per pack, which I hear is cheap compared to other places, and certain brands.

/Lately, it's either Basic Light 100's, or Marlboro Special Blend Light 100's.

Just an observation, Don't be sending me no Nastygrams.

You need to chat to someone fella...I got an ear or fingers to type. By the way, I enjoy a couple of ciggies at night. Don't smoke during the day, can't stand the taste :).

I quit smoking on April 14, 2011 by using the electronic cigarette, which is water vapor. It makes you believe you are still smoking. I have saved a ton of money. I can't stand the smell of cigs now, it turns my stomach. Tried a lot of different methods over the years to stop smoking and none worked till I found the e-cig. I am very thankful to the chinese guy who invented the e-cig!

I know a lot of ex-smokers who feel the same way about smell of cigarette smoke, oddly I still find it pleasant when I'm around smokers. (I just don't like the stale smell of old lingering smoke) But fresh smoke still smells pretty delicious to me.

Ok... The fresh, yet acrid scent of cigarette smoke during those few seconds that separate light from dark. Memoirs of a Nude Pyromaniac :). Sounds kinda dangerous and sexy at the same time.
