I'm surprised that anyone has picked up the little green garden snakes and played with them, though. Their one defense mechanism is releasing a truly disgusting scent.

I had one release it's musk on my hand... very gross. It smelled like skunk.

I had some pet garter snakes as a kid. I kept them for about a month each. I fed them salamanders and grasshoppers. I eventually got bored with keeping them. Before letting the last one go, I decided to show it to my father. I was keeping it in a shoe box under the porch; he had no idea that I had them. I brought the snake into the house and held it up to him. I had no idea that he was afraid of snakes. It was the only time that I saw fear in my father's face.

rec3000, I guess some snakes have different "variations" on that scent. I don't play with snakes; not because I'm scared of them, but because I don't want to traumatize them.

My sister and I were visiting Mom a few years back, and doing some yard work for her. We found a little green snake, and she thought it was so cute and pretty. I urged her to leave him alone, but she insisted on picking him up. It took her about 6 washings to get the carrion smell off her hands.

DC, I was just a kid who didn't know any better. I wouldn't manhandle a snake now... or even keep one as a pet. I thought snakes were cool and couldn't resist.

A year after that story took place my family to the country. I had to mow about an acre of grass with a push mower. I ended up chopping up hundreds of snakes by the end of the summer. I would mow as slowly as possible, hoping that snakes would move out of the way, but many chose to stay still and use their camoflauge. It was awful and I really hated how the two halves of the snake writhed as if in pain. Being a snake lover, it kinda traumatized me.... but the lawn needed a mowin'.

There used to be a place here in the mountains of Coloraod where you could order rattlesnake meat. You could have it as a burger or just straight. They would keep the rattlers in a cage and you would pick out the one you want. Their meat is very tasty. Very sweet.

I've always wanted to try cobra meat. I hear that is very good too.

I had a pet royal python, I've never had a fear of snakes, the little bugger escaped once, worked his way inside the sofa and wrapped himself around the springs and stuff, we had to cut it open to get him out.

Where I live is in the mountains. If you get close to the wild you will find poisonous snakes; copperheads, and two kinds of rattlesnakes, eastern dimondback and timber rattlers for those not in the U.S. those are pit vipers. But I have never seen a copperhead and only once saw 3 little rattlers cross my path hiking near Nashville. No where near where I live. Where I live we sometimes have problems with black bears and three weeks ago my brother almost got attacked by a panther in his yard. It killed his dog. The fish and game captured it and relocated it the next day. Very rare cat here though we have mountain lyons and I understand that they are the same except for color.

...Yup you guessed it, it was a centipede. I was letting it crawl up my arm and the next thing I knew my arm was stinging like crazy...

I hate when centipedes come crawling into the house. I have to run and get the cutlass to deal with them. Once upon a time my cat brought a 4' long snake into the house. I donned my garden gloves and put it outside. I'm glad the snakes of N.P. aren't poisonous. If they were I would've used the cutlass on them too.

The only snakes I have come in contact with are small garden snakes and water mocassins but I stay away from the water mocassins. I remember one time I was fishing with some friends on these rocks and one of my friends started freaking out about a snake. I turned around and it was right behind me with its head popping up out of the rocks. Needless to say we found another spot to fish at.

Snakes kind of scare me, but I'm glad you didn't hurt it. Whenever I find spiders in my house I take them outside. I lived with a snake before (no, not my ex) and it would get out and slither around the house and make my mom scream...poor mom!

That reminds me of this one episode of cops I was watchin like a month ago. Some woman called the cops because there was a snake on her porch and she was histarical. Anyway the cops got there and saw the snake, it was hanging off of her awning. Since she was freaking out so bad the cops couldn't wait for someone to come and get it. So one of the cops grabbed a stick or something and smacked it real hard in the side of its head which instantly killed it. I thought it was kind of messed up. I think snakes are pretty cool so I don't like to see one get killed or any animal for that matter. Then the took the stick, scooped it up and threw it in her outside trash can. It was sad.:frown1:

I saw that episode too- and it WAS sad. Ignorance is no excuse for cruelty, but on that show they are either ignorant a lot, or naturally cruel....
I prefer snakes to spiders or ants, had pet snakes up till my late teens.
Garden snakes here are usually of the black with yellow stripe variety, theyre quite a bit bigger than the green ones, but they have that same awful smelling method of defense.
I usually had to save them from my dog, she was very very quick and thought it was her duty to keep yard and home free of any 'pests', in the only way she knew how- that said, I never needed a barn cat for the mice, she also kept the barn free of them as well.

I suppose I will fess up and admit my truly less than masculinity identity here and insert that when it comes to snakes, I am truly a puss. A snake is a snake; I personally do not want to be in any close proximity to it nor do I want it or any reminders of its presences to be around me. I am terrified of them. Period.

Culturally, for my tribe, snakes also represent death and well, quite frankly, I am not ... ready to die just yet. :)

I hate snakes.....dead or alive. Of course, a dead one is better unless I happen to spot it without warning.

I hate even looking at a picture of one in a magazine. I go to the top of the page to turn so I don't have to put my fingers anywhere near the photo.

I don't know if I could even suck a cock with a snake tattooed on or around it, although I might try! Queer...ain't I?
