Halcyondays, I did not say that "human biology is outdated and anti-pleasure", I said that your limited concept of our life's "purpose" is.

It's not my concept. It's biology. And I did not say it's our only purpose in life. Nor was I suggesting that you or anyone should or should not have children. You asked why you're here. My answer is that your parents conceived and raised you. Please don't shoot the messenger. Any larger purpose or meaning is for you to determine.

Just an assumption, but, I'm guessing you are a Catholic... Right?

Agnostic since mid-teens and atheist by twenty. My parents attempted to make a catholic of me but it didn't take.

Morally, ethically, I beleive we have a role to leave this world a better place.

I beleive we can enjoy sex without putting consuming mouths on the planet. (I'm a negative population growth proponent)

I agree. I'm all for sex for pleasure. It's easy for me to say that from the comfort of a wealthy first world nation with accessible birth control. The hard reality is that billions of women on this planet do not have control over their reproductive lives. If they have sex they're going to be mothers. Until all women are empowered our population will continue to grow exponentially.

"Catholic"... "Pragmatic"... Same difference... lol

Sorry if I have come off as being too confrontational or defensive, but, seriously, the last thing this endangered planet needs is my "spawn"... I don't like people telling me I should be making babies, nor that if I don't, I am not fulfilling my "purpose".

Intelligent people have acknowledged that overpopulation is the greatest threat to human life, and the natural functions of the Earth's environments, for over a century. Get with that program.

I do. Negative population growth. Not zero, negative.
And I can't count the number of times I've been asked if I was going to have a second child.
I still get the question. My child is 24 years old.

Yes, you did! >
"Our purpose is to survive and procreate."
Agnostic since mid-teens and atheist by twenty. My parents attempted to make a catholic of me but it didn't take.

As even "former" Catholic, sex-positive advice columnist, Dan Savage has admitted, "raised as a Catholic, always a Catholic."

Not "shooting the messenger", but letting you know that your message is not a realistic one for me.

errr... concerning the overpopulation...
err... I think that the earth can offer sufficient ressources for all the humans currently...
... at the condition that the humans understand the meaning of the verb... to share...
lol
moreover... humans have a tendency to concentrate themselves in the cities as shown by the night time images of the earth...
so there still remains many friendly/not hostile places where humans can potentially live...
but most of them refuse this idea apparently...
this is why it seems to me that humans are not primarily too numerous...
saying that... there isn't an imperative need for everyone to have children... lol... particularly in already highly concentrated population areas...

Procreating is certainly not my purpose in this life...

I - like - to think that when I eventually die that the universe will go with me. I think Queen wrote a song about that many years ago.

That's going to be as much of a guessing game as the so-called "Big Bang".
That is science today afterall... exactly what people are doing in this thread (speculation)

There was a time when the scientific method was employed... to be proven or in otherwords turned into "law" and experiment had to be reproduced to demonstrate the claim. And it had to be repeated a second time at minimum.

Gotta love pluralism :D

Oh?... So in the post where you said, and I quote: "Our purpose... is to procreate.", you didn't mean to actually procreate?... As in, produce children, but some other kind of procreation?

I said our purpose is to procreate. That's the biological imperative of your body whether you like it or not, want it or not, or choose it or not. Your body cannot tell the difference the between sex to procreate and sex not to procreate.

Halcyondays, I did not say that "human biology is outdated and anti-pleasure", I said that your limited concept of our life's "purpose" is.

^This response implies that I think that our only purpose is to procreate. I did not say that and do not think it. This is your misunderstanding of my statements. "Anti-pleasure" is a red herring and unscientific.

I never said or implied that you should have children.

So far there is nothing we know that prevents the Second Law of Thermodynamics from working until all of the universe is at a uniform temperature and there are no concentrations of energy. Its called the Heat Death of the universe.

The Second Law of Thermodynamics says that over time a system and its surroundings will increase in entropy. That describes the tendency for all energy concentrations to "spread out" such that they are no longer available to do work.

Unless we learn something new about the universe, it ends not with a bang but a whisper.

oh I like justasking's answer... wow!...
and it's so simple to understand!...
thank you!...
but... justasking...
considering a cloud...
it's a concentration of energy... it generates... grows... reaches a peak of activity... and thereafter declines... and dissipates...
but... if some mechanisms gather in the air... a new cloud can regenerate on the remnants of the former cloud...
is the entropy of the new cloud higher than the former cloud entropy?...
I suppose that the cloud area is isolated from the surronding airmass... so that the regeneration mechanisms are not related to exchange of matters or energy with the air all around...
.........
I think that my idea is that there may be internal oscillations around an equilibrium state allowing the cloud to undergo regeneration/dissipation cycles... until its death heat...
so... maybe the universe may undergo such oscillations... and endlessly delay its end... like an asymptote...
no?...
thank you!...

It's ok, from what I can gather our own space rubbish will end our ventures anyway. We can only track something the size of a cricket ball.

Yet a fleck of paint can place bullet size holes in a satellite.

Scientists often wonder why they suddenly lose communication with functioning satellite.

We all will be left pondering our penises......and vaginas :), which, is not so bad I spose :)

This is your day.
E Musk { tesla } is accepting applications for a trip to mars in 2025? Its a one way trip
I guess tents and ramen. If it was like a hollywood movie half of the females would look
like pamela anderson and grace kelly. Count me in.

This is what i remember from a pbs special based a book by an astronomer
so its flawed or not.

If you were to view the earth from a distance you could see george washington making a speech.
I guess you could describe it as space warping time. I don't know.

But it works in reverse and i think that's how astronomers have pieced together the big
bang theory though no one has actually observed it.

But there are plenty of questions.

All space was void except for a cluster of mass { worlds and suns by the thousands ?}
Where did they come from ?
Why were they clustered.

Then a burst of energy sent them spinning through space.
What was the source of the energy.

Has this happen again and if not why not ?

And though science can form a timeline { in their words not mine } there is
something or even someone blocking their efforts to see what happen before
the big bang or the formation of the cluster. The window for some reason is closed.

Maybe there has a breakthrough ? Anyone know. There is only a rough view.
