My boyfriend shaves about once a month, so he usually has some state of short beard going on. I think he looks youthfully pretty when he first shaves, but it feels a bit prickly and I actually prefer the more rugged look that occurs after four or five days of stubble.

Being a bit of an indie rocker, I've dated dudes with "Ted Kaczynski"-style beards too. It's not my favorite look, but a really handsome guy can get away with it (I think Devendra Banhart kinda rocks it).

As far as facial hair goes, I like even growth. Clean-shaven is fine, stubble is fine, a full beard is fine...but goatees, soul patches, and moustaches are usually deal-breakers for me. I can't think of any instance in which they look good. I agree with some of the above posters that facial hair can sometimes save a face when a guy has a weak chin, but it's always preferable for said guy to grow a full beard, in my opinion, rather than a goatee. Goatees and soul patches, to me, just scream "I fancy myself both a poet and a ladies' man." I have pretty strong opinions about this, because most of the guys in the polyamorous community (which, being non-monogamous, I'm forced to derive most of my dates from) tend to have goatees (along with attending Renaissance Faires, considering themselves "pagan", and being morbidly obese). It's one of the banes of my existence. I don't understand what open relationships have to do with the compulsion to grow selective and dubious facial hair, but there seems to be a strong correlation.

lol.

I agree with the whole sentiment, though - a goatee looks like the guy puts way too much thought and energy into his appearance. I'm not a woman, and I'm not gay, but I imagine men who look like they're trying are generally less attractive.

Well, I married him when he had a full beard and now he has a goatee that he keeps well trimmed. I think I've tamed him.

I do find some beards attractive but extremes are no no. Stubble or long beards I dont like.

Used to be that the stand alone moustache was the only facial hair that bothered me because I just automatically think "cartoon villain". Having seen some serious WTF? styles I have to make the following plea.

If you have a beard, please:
No braids.
No shaved stripes or patterns.
No reverse mohawks.
No streaks or frosted tips.
No parts.
No Effing beads!
And do not wax it into pretty shapes!

Your facial hair is NOT art and the only statement you're making is that you're a vainglorious tool with too much time on your hands.

I strongly doubt that.

Certain guys can pull off having a beard, but personally I like a man without one. I do not mind a little stubble, especailly if they have a boyish face. If the stubble starts getting too thick, then it is time to shave.

A boyish face - see thats the thing. When Cap first shaved off his beard around 10 years ago he looked like he was 14 years old. It just looked weird, lol! Then he shaved his head a while back and kept his beard and I told him he looked like a pirate. Now it's just perfect with shorter hair and a goatee. If only he'd act his age.

Medium stubble / five o'clock shadow on certain swarthy classically masculine / handsome looking men (that moisturize! As that softens the emerging bristles and makes enjoyable kissing possible ) can be very attractive .. but then I'm quite partial to the rough and ready look..

In saying that however , I find that heavy / dense facial hair / blonde beards / red beards do absolutely nothing for me what so ever.

Ah, Dolf...
It ain't the beard... its the Man.

a man who makes you laugh and that you find admirable
who cherishes you above all others...

who delights even in your dark side...

if such a man sported a beard would you reject him?
Or would you find beards suddenly more endearing?

It is the woman with whom I share rapport that defines what I find attractive...
not the other way around.

Full beards remind me of Santa and mountain men. Not for me. But trimmed versions are fine. 3-4 day stubble is fine too.

Just stay away with the sandpaper stubble!! I hate my face looking like I just argued with poison oak.

if you loved me would the taste of badly cooked, burnt food suddenly be endearing?

no?

if i loved the man the sensation of beard would still be just as unpleasant and rash inducing.

Men hate you. So all is balanced.
you wub me!
