That in a family with more than one son (child regardless of sex?) that the elder child/children have a strong tendency to be straight and the younger (in particular, the youngest) have a strong tendency to be gay.

This is certainly the case in both my family and my wife's and at least one other case that I can think of. I even have a theory as to the cause and, no, it has nothing to do with mother's aging eggs or father's tired sperm.

Your thoughts? Your personal experience?

Exactly the opposite is true in my case - I'm a first-born, and gay. I'm sure there are many studies of this with results on-line. The most credible theory I've heard has to do with stress on the pregnant mother, which causes hormonal changes in the fetus ... I recall a study made of pregnancies during WW2 that supported the theory.

lol... is that why a middle child is bi like me? ;)

Lab studies started over thirty years ago continue to prove that 90% of us are bi, meaning we have some sexual physiological response to both sexes.

Only 10% are 100% straight or gay, meaning they have zero sexual physiological response to the opposite or same sex.

My oldest brother = stereotypically masculine and gay.

My second oldest brother = sometimes effeminate and straight. Fundamentalist Christian.

My next oldest brother = rarely effeminate, but doesn’t feel the need to “butch it up” either, and straight. Just about in the center between liberal and conservative.

Me = mostly stereotypically masculine and gay. Much more liberal than conservative on most social policies and issues, but quite a bit more conservative than liberal on most fiscal policies and issues.

According to proponents of the theory, the mother’s immune response is changed during the pregnancy of a boy, increasing the likelihood that a subsequent male child would be gay.

Men with older brothers are more likely to be gay, study suggests

I actually believe it is more nurture than nature.

There are both subtle and not so subtle differences in the way children in the same family are raised. For example, my eldest brother has often complained that he had to wait until his 18th birthday before allowed to get behind the wheel of a car, the next eldest a year earlier and the next on his 16th birthday (which was the legal age in our state).

The eldest endured more, and more severe, punishments than the youngest (by far!), and to a large degree received more attention from our parents in most areas of life. He even got piano lessons! (Which he hated and did not keep up; I wish someone had given me the opportunity to learn the piano...)

On the other hand, the youngest will always and forever be mom's "baby" and so received an entirely different level and type of attention.

The younger children in a family are likely to endure bullying by the older children, certainly not the other way around.

Finally, the youngest gets to watch the trials and tribulations of his older siblings - a fact which may well color his reactions to all sorts of life events.

Pretty sure homosexuality is a born trait.

Sounds like a load of old nonsense tbh.

I'm not sure about this idea regarding birth order and homosexuality? That sounds suspect to me unless they have more data to prove it.

My older sister and I are both bisexual, so I'm pretty sure that our homosexual tendencies are just not random in nature. There has to be some kind of genetic influence.

Key phrase in those studies is identify as gay.

The whole time I was growing up I identified as straight. Then it changed. Did I change or just discover who I really was? That process took twenty years. For some it may take 30-40 years or more. Do we ever know who we are? Entirely?

Did Chuang-tzu dream he was a butterfly or was he a butterfly dreaming he was Chuang-tzu? ;)

This is all about likelihood, not certainty, so just because someone is the oldest and is gay does not make this untrue.

For me, I’m the youngest of 4 (3 boys, 1 girl) and I’m the only gay one. However my bf is 2nd out of 4 (older sister and two younger brothers) and he’s bi. I think the others are straight.

I honestly believe, for purposes of this discussion, bi and gay are fundamentally different things.

From the wiki article: “The mechanism is thought to be a maternal immune response to male fetuses, whereby antibodies neutralize male Y-proteins thought to play a role in sexual differentiation during development. This would leave some regions of the brain associated with sexual orientation in the 'female typical' arrangement – or attracted to men.”

I doubt much research has been done on bisexual men because historically and presently they have tended to be more in the closet, but if the idea is that having older brothers increases your chances of attraction to men, then I think bi is relevant, especially for someone like my bf who is more attracted to men than women.
