I'm surprised that so many americans even know what the word 'France' means. I thought they could only make the difference between the US and Mexico (rest of the world).

Ma mère est française, et je vais là souvent, et c'est la langue la plus musicale que j'ai jamais écouté!

What does it mean to be French? Well, according to Etienne, a dear friend from Toulouse, it means:

1. Beginning to smoke Gitanes at two months.
2. Knowing that with enough cheese, garlic, and cream ANYTHING can be eaten.
3. That life is shit! Get used to it "ewe poooosey 'Mericaaainze!"
and finally
4. No one in Canada really speaks French!

We like Etienne. He's fun. But we make him smoke outside.

To be a country that has more history then almost any existing nation on earth except maybe China.

Also they have a lot of nuclear reactors. And high speed trains.

They did win at least world war 1 with very little help from the USA....so you're all wrong. And "technically" they won ww2 also.

Also France rivals the USA for being the nation that most people speak up to.

oh yah, and 82 million tourist a year can't be wrong.

They're performing the best amid the recession too, much better then english speaking nations and especially spain.

Vous avez écouté? Ou vous avez entendu?

I agree...French is quite beautiful, and is my favorite language. Italian runs a decent second, but I like it more for the melodic quality of its typical delivery.

English, and even moreso the German from which it derives, is very utilitarian by comparison.

and
Italy and Egypt and albeit a name change Turkey

"Italy" as a nation is barely more then 150 years old. Egypt has gone through so many transformations it's impossible to say how or what it is. Turkey as in the ottoman empire is not as old as france...the ottomans came about in the 12th-13th century, france was created with the crowning of king clovis in the 3rd century, almost a 1000 years difference.

It means giving the Irish a break i guess!

That's a very British thing, I think. Here in America, the Irish aren't the butt of jokes; that's reserved for Poles.

And most of all: what does it mean to be French?

As we say in English, they have a certain "Je ne sais quoi".

that france died during the revolution. when you overthrow your government you become a different country.

history of the people is different than the history of the nation.

Ok, having looked for research i found nothing to back up claims that Italy or Turkey are older although i did find out that the specific cities of Istanbul and Rome are older than Paris.

Civilisation began around Egypt but i could'nt find how long it has been called Egypt as a nation.

On one site, cylist.com i found that France was pegged into second place as the world's oldest country by surprisingly San Marino? I don't know how to copy more than one link for posting and i already had this one copies:- Which Is the Oldest Nation on Earth? | Big Site of Amazing Facts ©

It suggests Ethiopia is actually the oldest nation even tho it used to be named Abyssinia.

Elsewhere i also found evidence that India has existed as a nation (regardless of its commonwealth rule) since the 11th BC tho i find that hard to believe.

This was very interesting a question and just goes to show how some facts can be very suprising, i would never have thought of France as a world's oldest country.

Denmark and Switzerland are also amongst the oldest (according to cylist)

The Englishers say eat, drink and be merry.

The Frenchies say, eat well, drink well, love well and be merry, and hope that some other dumb fucker will pay.

I prefer the frenchies.

Personally, I enjoy the British most when it comes to humor based on the observation of human foibles. But the French, in general, have better skin and really know how to fuck.

That's just my personal observation from my sad little part of Barcelona where life is so sweet and tranquil we really haven't much to complain about. OK, today's sudden drop in the Bolsa has been a bit of a surprise, but still . . . no one is really complaining or worried.
