First off, lay off the poor guy! So many of you automatically state that you would have been proud to state you're uncut (and I think I would have too), but you're basing that bravery on what? Being a European guy where uncut are in the majority?
If so, you can't say that you would have outed yourself as intact in a society where cut is the "norm". And to say that you would and then ridicule another for not doing so is very short sighted indeed.
As for the appropriateness of the tutor, are we dumbing-down education to the point where anatomy cannot ever be mentioned? Even to a room of adults?
It worries me that so many of the responses question appropriateness, do you have your pitchfork ready?

uttahere:
As another has mentioned, a place of education should be an open forum for discussion, and a class discussing such wide and intellectual subjects as Sociology are especially so. To even contemplate taking action against a tutor for asking such a question to an audience of adults (a question which no member of the class is
required to answer) perhaps goes to show why American education standards are so poor.
It gives the impression that 50% of the class are just itching for an excuse to sue.
And OP, I love the Uncut v's Cut threads, they're fascinating. I think it's bizarre that Americans view uncut as "gross", it is the natural state of the penis.
But then the hypocrisy is deep. This is also a nation that has openly criticised the genital mutilation of women in African countries, and yet openly supports the genital mutilation of male children within its own borders.
No matter how you look at it and no matter what people claim the benefits of circumcision are, the American people and government allow genital mutilation. There is no question of morality here, and you can completely disregard all the data on one side or another.
The
fact of the matter is that boys are routinely circumcised against their will. By its very definition this is genital mutilation. And the American people allow it to continue.
Now the really interesting question is why they allow it.
Is it because they are fooled by the false information relating to mythical medical benefits, or is it because they want every male citizen to adhere to a physical ideal?
One is based on ignorance and the other is something more sinister.
Either way it is crazy to imagine that this is openly permitted and yet stem cell research is "morally wrong".
Don't get me wrong, I love Americans. And us Brits have many flaws socially and psychologically too. But sometimes us Europeans do look at your entire Social structure and go "WTF?!"
