The first song that comes to mind is Fairytale of New York. It's that line, "I've built my dreams around you." It gets me every time.

    How about you?

'This woman's work' ..Kate Bush or the cover that Maxwell did...

But that's because I want to have my family play it one day when I die on my burial..

An old Elvis Presley song, "My Boy" Very sappy. A father singing to his young son while he sleeps about the parents troubled marriage. "This is no happy home, but God knows how I try". Maybe hits too close to home.

When I read this thread title, the first thing that popped into my mind was Boy Blue by Cyndi Lauper; at the time of the live recording posted above, she could have been talking about any one of scores of my friends, either gone entirely or else diminishing before my eyes.

Other songs related to the same theme, at least for me:

    Together In Electric Dreams
    Phil Oakey
Hold On To My Love Jimmy Ruffin

These songs will always remind me of losing my French lover in 1992 (anniversary pending):
    Verdi Cries Natalie Merchant
    Half A World Away REM
    Les Feuilles Mortes Juliette Greco

Tom Waits' Blue Valentines can get me going sometimes, too. Guess I'm just a sentimental ole fool.

That was by Dolly Parton  :biggrin1: :poke: lol

For some reason "Amazing Grace" will reduce me to tears everytime.

There are also a couple of songs that deal with child abuse such as

    Alyssa Lies
(*warning* if you haven't heard it, don't listen to it with others around)

My little girl met a new friend, just the other day, on the playground at school between the tires and the swings

But she came home with tear-filled eyes, and she said to me "Daddy, Alyssa lies"

Well I just brushed it off at first, 'cause I didn't know how much my little girl had been hurt or the things she had seen. I wasn't ready when I said "You can tell me"

    and she said...

    "Alyssa lies to the classroom,
    Alyssa lies everyday at school,
    Alyssa lies to the teachers
as she tries to cover every bruise"

My little girl laid her head down that night to go to sleep.
As I stepped out the room, I heard her say a prayer so soft and sweet
"God bless my mom and my Dad and my new friend, Alyssa *oh*I know she needs you bad

Because Alyssa lies to the classroom,
    Alyssa lies everyday at school,
    Alyssa lies to the teachers
as she tries to cover every bruise"

    (bridge)

I had the worst night of sleep in years as I tried to think of a way to calm her fears. I knew just what it was I had to do *I knew exactly what I had to do* but when we got to school on Monday I heard the news

My little girl asked me why everybody looked so sad the lump in my throat grew bigger with every question that she asked.
Until I felt the tears run down my face and I told her that Alyssa wouldn't be at school today

'Cause she doesn't lie in the classroom
she doesn't lie anymore at school
    Alyssa lies with Jesus
because there's nothin' anyone would do

Tears filled my eyes when my little girl asked me why
    Alyssa lies
*Oh Daddy, oh* Daddy tell me why
    Alyssa lies

As I posted in that other thread, I'm an easy cry while watching movies.

But I can't think of a single song that makes me cry.

I rarely actually cry, but I do get a lump in my throat that prevents me from being able to sing the lyrics.

This also did it for me, but I'm a big ole softie. Okay, I'm an ittie bittie softie...

Well, that line also puts a lump in my throat.

Seriously, though, in this particular song, the fact that it's not entirely sweet and sentimental from beginning to end, that makes that line more moving to me. It wouldn't work in other songs.
