Well since I just had a breakdown this is the song that knows how I feel:

I feel like a prisoner in my own life
But I'm too tired to break away
This place is darker than it used to be
And it's harder everyday

If I could turn it all around I would
Get my feet back on the ground I would

I Would find out what it means to be satisfied
I Would search my soul and needs to find peace of mind
I Would try hard to believe in a higher power
But its easier to let it be

The days seem longer but time still rushes by
And I'm not where I wanna be
I'm almost standin but not enough to see
Maybe lost is all I am

Richie Kotzen - I Would [From The Album 'Break It All Down']

It's a great song...

I've also been getting into the Mars Volta lately, lots of good stuff coming in from the indie front.
[post=294084]Quoted post[/post]

A lot of my friends back home are fans of Mars Volta, i've listened to bits, but not got into it that much.

And in my <grossly over-rated> opinion everthings good from the indie front :D though my CD collection would probably say otherwise

I couldn't listen to music when I went through a rough patch about a year and a half ago. I didn't actually have the energy to choose and put on a CD though, so that might explain it. I do find that most of my moments of despair can be soothed by the Eel's generic 'teen angst'.

I hope you feel better soon though Knight.

I would have picked many of the songs you have chosen. When I hear 'Pride' from U2, I just have to turn the volume up.

I also have a few more favourites, most of which are ballads from the 1980s:

'Heavenly Blue' from Burton Cummings (Canadian) - beautiful lyrics and melody;

'Worlds Away' from Strange Advance (Canadian);

'Évidemment' from France Galle (French) ;

'Avec simplicité' from Richard Cocciante (French);

'So bist Du' from Peter Maffay (Germany)

Music really is food for the soul, is it not?

This has to be one of the all time prettiest songs I think I ever heard......

Long Distance Winner
appears on Buckingham Nicks (1973); The Enchanted Boxed Set (1998)

Lyrics

Sunflowers and your face fascinate me
You love only the tallest trees
I come running down the hill
But you're fast
You're the winner
Long distance winner

Not unlike the blue white fire
You burn brightly in spite of yourself
I bring the water down to you
But you're too hot to touch

You love somebody
Save their soul
Tie them to your heaven
Erase their hell
Love their lifestyle if you feel it
Don't try to change them
You never will

Sunflowers and your face fascinate me
You go into the dusty pink day
I come calling unto you
But you run
You're the winner, the
Long distance winner

I have to admit that I've honestly giggled for twenty minutes now over this silly little nugget:

"You got a fast car
I got a tarantula on my head...

Thanks, mindseye. I plan to steal that one and press it into service ASAP. Where shall I send the check?

I have really enjoyed reading through this topic. Some great songs discussed here--poignant and clever stuff. You've made me want to check out some things that I haven't yet. (I have yet to jump on the Tori Amos train, but she has all the hallmarks of someone I'd end up loving)

There are a lot of songs that have a hold on me like this. Off the top of my head, I think of:

"Fool of Me" by Me'shell N'degeocello
"Addicted" by Neil Finn
"Penitent" by Suzanne Vega
"Driving Sideways" by Aimee Man
"Strange Relationship" by Prince
"I Don't Really Love You Anymore" by The Magnetic Fields
"Polaroids" by Shawn Colvin

And since mindseye mentioned Tracy Chapman's "I Used to Be a Sailor," I remember keeping that song on repeat for weeks way back when. Mesmerizing to me.

There are probably dozens more. They all kind of knocked the breath out of me when I first heard them. Or sometimes only after the lyrics hit me between the eyes, maybe after several listenings, even. It's funny how that works, isn't it?

Great topic. I'm eager to hear more.

This is one of those questions that I always find hard to answer because it changes all the time.

for the moment at least the 2 most poinient songs for me have to be

Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Airplane over the Sea.
and
Rilo Kiley - With Arms Outstretched.

Without bringing to mood down to much, they helped me deal with my granddad's death about 7 weeks ago.

OMG, I love Rilo Kiley! I actually wrote a parody of "Better Sons and Daughters" that came out pretty funny. Good musical choices, guy!

Mme. Z, you live in the southwestern Ohio area...do you by any chance listen to 97X, WOXY? Quite possibly the best alternaitve radio station in the world! I know they ar eno longer on the air, but they broadcast live on the internet at WOXY.com. Definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of Rilo Kiley and other great alt rock bands.

By the way, would love to chat Ohio with you sometime.

Wow, memories. I grew up in S.W. Ohio and went to the red brick university in Oxford town myself. Listened to WOXY all the time. I believe it was the station Tom Cruise was listening to in "Rain Man" for the trivia buffs. Ohio, a good place to be from! Sorry Mme. Z.

Someone tell me more about Rilo Kiley. They're playing near here in June and I'm itching for a good concert.

Thanks!

UH OH. Someone asked a music question. Then Shelby cracked me up, pushing it real good with that post above... but the clincher was the hendrix in the tag. Thanks for that.

AHEM HEM HEM *rolling up her sleeves.... getting up to put on music... what will it be.. ? hm...

And thanks to pappy for reminding me of "turn the page;" what a great song!

Along the lines of old faves...
I hope you Etheridge folks are familiar with "Chrome Plated Heart" - fantastic.

And as for Joni Mitchell, "Case of You" (and Tori did a cover)

Total anthems for me now are both courtesy of Erikah Badu - "Certainly" and "Sometimes.."

Who gave you permission to rearrange me
Certainly not me
Who told you that it was all right to love me
certainly, certainly not me;
I was not looking for no love affair
but now you wanna kiss me..

BOTH songs are bang on. ALL the lyrics.

Sometimes I don't love you any more
Sometimes I'm in love with you..
etc

Jeff Buckley's "Last Goodbye" and "Lover You Should Have Come Over" - omigod. the performance on that song (lover...) is unREAL. I cried the first time I heard it...

"she's a tear that hangs in side my soul forever"

To cheer back up, Seal's "Heavenly" from Seal IV is FANTASTIC.

Rage Against the Machine speaks to me a lot nowadays... gee. "Testify," "Killing in the name of..." (is that the title of that song?)
NIN - the wretched
Tool - "Eulogy." Also "Opiate"

Then also current Adam Freeland (trance/dancish DJ) and Chemical Bros stuff, especially on the political side..

ZEPPLIN - "Tea For One;" "Down on Me" - Janis joplin; Jimi Hendrix: There are SO many, but "Voodoo Chile," "Izabella"

ok that's a few for now. Oh but also I CANNOT forget Gladys Knight & the Pips; "I've Got to Use My Imagination" and of course, "midnite Train to Georgia".

Clapton's "Nobody Knows you when you're down & out" (and of course the more old-school recordings of it."

Ok ok Now I"ll stop

QUEEN "I Want to Break Free"

OK now i"m done

MASSSIVE ATTACK - Teardrop. TOTALLY.

learningirl: OOPS but I MUST add

Ani DiFranco's "Dilate" -- incredible lyrics; fantastic song; turned me into a fan... took my attention away from Tori...

Also her "Napoleon," and "outta me onto you"

orionsword57: I guess it's pretty sad when you love music as much as I do and haven't heard ONE of the songs mentioned here. Age does not have its privileges sometimes.

Don't feel badly about that--a lot of these are new to me as well. But it does give me some things to consider checking out, though!

There are definately some of me and my steady that we both love, and the we both connect a lot with - here's another Top-5:

1. Blueberry Hill - Fats Domino
2. Dream a little Dream with me - Mamas & Papas
3. Your latest Trick - Dire Straits
4. Gentle on my mind - Glenn Campbell & Bobbie Gentry
5. The way it always starts - Gerry Rafferty

I'd say there are some more that 'resonate' with us, but those are definately the Top-5.

I have so many,...

Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller
Begin the Beguine by Cole Porter, including, surpisingly, the version from the movie as sung by Sheryl Crow in a minor key,
Make Your Own Kind of Music, and Dream a Little Dream of Me, by Mama Cass
Unforgetable by Nat King Cole, not the duet Natalie made up...
3AM, from the Latter Days soundtrack (the DVD, not the CD)
(I Love You for) Sentimental Reasons,
Nice Work if you Can Get It,
Isn't It Romantic,
Blue Skies,
Embracable You and I've Got a Crush On You, by the Gershwins,
Rainbow Connection, Kermit the Frog,
Over The Rainbow, by Judy of course,
Moon River,
At This Moment, Bily Vera and the Heartbreakers,
You Are My Special Angel, the Vogues,
Save the Last Dance for Me,
When I Fall In Love,
As Time Goes By, Doolie Wilson
Danny Boy,

as you can tell, I am a sucker for a melody and a lyric.
Any of these songs can, if performed well, can wrench my heart right out of my chest...

This list is also a great example of why I don't buy much music anymore, there is so little GOOD music being made anymore.

Turn out the light
Our story is ending
We wore this thing so far down I can't tell what I'm talkin about
Take what you want
This old love is empty
And I don't have anything here that I can't live without

You say your spirit's gone
I can't say that you're wrong
I know I tried (I know how I tried)
We came into it strong
Maybe we stayed in too long
Woman let's say goodbye

Tell me a lie
So I can believe there's more than this moment-to-moment passin us by
Look in my eyes
And I'll know it's over
And I will go on from right here with the rest of my life

[Chorus]

I can take a loss
I can move on
Say goodbye
Let's say goodbye

Oh you said that I would never leave you
I said I think you're crazy
You said...I would never leave you
I said...I think you're crazy!
