Quick question

In what sports are the stats of women comparable or superior to the stats of men in the same sport?

IIRC the only ones even remotely close were skiing and equestrian sports. And possibly some board game "sports". And thats not even me being sexiest im asking a legitimate question

Obviously im referring to the top end since anybody can suck at a sport but obviously not everyone can excel.

It truly does boil down to overall popularity and TV contracts and the ratings a particular sport can generate. Period.
Venus and Serena Williams and Maria Sharipova get incredible endorsements because people watch them. WNBA...not so much.

Ugh.
You just don`t get it.
Women are not men. Women`s sports are not men`s sport.
Tell me, when Marion Jones won all those Olympic gold medals, more than any other man in athletics that olympic year. When every child in Laos and God know where knew her name and face, did she make more money than, let`s just say men`s 100m champion? I don`t think so.
So lets face it.
Even when they become more popular than men, they still make less.

lol, this thread in a nutshell: Women aren't men, and they make less money on average.
Yes.
And isn`t the second part of your sentence a shame?
And I think we should ask ourselves the questions:
Do we enjoy such position women hold in society?
Am I one of those men?
Am I the one who in public says the nicest things about women, but deep down I really enjoy their status cause I can control them?

I know my answers.
Well, basically it`s the same question, LOL.

As a FEMALE who for 17 years has covered the world of driving sports, I can say with all honesty that even though Billie Jean King did a TON for Women's Rights in the 1970's when she played against Bobby Riggs and won, women's sports is STILL in it's infancy. Yes Open Wheel and NASCAR both have had some females that have taken on a male dominated sport by the throat, they are still underpaid. And why? Because the few women that have had the balls to jump into a male dominated sport aren't as good as the men.

If you are going to take the Tennis players and rank them by earnings alone, you have to take out the equation of endorsements, and the same goes for Little Miss Danica Patrick. Take OUT the endorsements and I'm sorry, she's pretty, but she's NOT the driver that the majority of the fields in Open Wheels and NASCAR are. PLAIN AND SIMPLE, some women CAN do what men do, in some cases we can do it better, but until the day comes that we have a WNFL or the WNBA is taken MORE seriously, women will CONTINUE to get the short end of the stick when it comes to being PAID to PLAY!

And that's my two cents......

I need your opinion as a pro.
Was it just about the money or you as a woman felt that your rights were stripped?

It's actually a bit of BOTH for me Luka. For years, women have been seen as nothing more than property. (In most societies that is, the only one I can think of off the top of my head where women were the head of the family unit would be the Native Americans)

But to have my gender laughed at when we try to break into what is normally positions held by men hurts. I'm not an athlete, but I hold great respect for Layla Ali and Georgia Foreman. I also hold great respect for other women that have TRIED to break through, not just the sports barriers, but those women that have TRIED to be the heads of major corporations, politicians and other professions that for MILLENNIA have been seen as a "MALE ONLY CLUB." I also hold respect for men who hold positions that were traditionally seen as "Women Only," such as teachers, nurses and day care workers.

I guess it pisses me off that I witnessed with my own eyes how my biological father would beat the CRAP out of my mother if she made more than him while she was one of the highest paid real estate brokers in North Texas. I think it scared him because a part of him realized that she didn't need to depend on him for financial gains. I wonder if that is the reason why women in sports aren't paid the same amount as the male athlete in the same sport.

And you buy this?

honestly, yeah

she was a VERY successful athlete, a great role model, never was in any real trouble until fairly recently, had a great smile and girl next door personality, if she had an agent who was anywhere near as good as the agents someone like cam newton has, she would still be rolling in bank

if i were her agent, after she won, i would have set her up for life...she should have gotten her track spikes, wheaties cereal, mad television endorsements, tv show deals, and even now, she should be a track analyst or something

you have to understand that athletes make a lot of their money on things outside of the actual sport

hell, michael jordan hasn't played a game since 03 and he'll be living comfortably for life based on his basketball shoe alone... jones was in the same position as MJ, very marketable and at the peak of her sport, she should be living large right now

^ Endorsements are a big thing, also people are still going to be far more excited in a mens division than a female one a large majority of the time, just because males are faster/stronger/more explosive therefore more exciting in general. Like when I watch a WNBA game it looks like slow-mo, and is mad boring in comparison. Same reason why there is no "strong women" competitions, or a really large one atleast. The males would make anything the females do seem unimpressive, people like to see big numbers.

exactly my point, she could have easily been the female version of usain bolt if the people behind the scenes knew what they were doing

honestly, idk why major companies don't pump as much money into female athletes the way they do male athletes, though i will say that they are getting better, when i would shop for cleats 5+ years ago, the female version of equipment seemed like hammy-downs in comparison, now companies like nike, under armour etc are actually providing top notch gear

everyone company is out looking for the next michael jordan, when they can easily market female athletes in the same way, it's a huge gap in the market that is not being fulfilled for some reason, and i have a feeling that it would be beneficial for both parties if a company like nike invested more in women's sports because it is slowly becoming more and more popular across the board

Disclaimer: Not at all saying women shouldn't continue to compete as they are now...just imagining from scratch a new kind of team sport.

I really think there should be a new sport created for women that plays to the strengths of women on a whole (the majority). Men ON AVERAGE have more outright strength and speed than women ON AVERAGE....football, basketball, boxing, MMA....all were created for the male athlete. They are sports where aggressive force plays a big role. (Of course basketball was far different in it's early days than it is now.)

Women are more WAY more flexible, graceful, nimble on their feet ON AVERAGE. I don't know what this sport would look like...I just know that a team sport has never been created with the modern female athlete in mind.

this made me think, does anyone know the payroll for female athletes when compared to male athletes in a sport like gymnastics or figure skating? i would assume women probably get paid more for those sports
