A real tear-jerker for sure. The news is so uniformly bad it's unreal :(

Reminds me of Italy. Italy is a 'dying country' says minister as birth rate plummets

The amazing paradox as wealth and education rises birth rates plummet and it seems true from country to country.

Well, immigration is the other aspect to it. Even the USA has a birth rate below replacement (if we were to completely shut down immigration (legal and illegal), the US population would be shrinking over time). Canada has a noticably lower birth rate than the USA does, but has twice the population growth rate (interesting tidbit... Canada has 11% the population that the US does, but has taken in 470 times as many refugees from Syria as the US has).

Immigration isn't a solution to everyone's problems. Puerto Rico welcomes people, but no one wants to move there right now because the job market is so bad.

I misread a statistic. Canada has taken in 2.5 times as many Syrian refugees as the USA (still much higher given Canada's much smaller population, but not 470 times higher).

Yes I had heard the US birth rate is below the replacement rate. There are lots of theories behind the negative correlation between female education and birth rates. Nothing definitive to my knowledge has been given.

Almost every western nation is. France, Iceland, and Greenland are virtually the only exceptions (and only barely so).

I just had my 4th kidlet last year.

Part of me is thinking of Idiocracy, as far as the lowered birth rates....

I would not be surprised if years down the road, Idiocracy is looked back upon with the same reverence that is applied to Dr Strangelove.

It's a brilliant piece of satire imo, and as scary to watch as it is fun.

And even more rather eyebrow raising evidence

....a new survey of Japanese people ages 18 to 34 found that 70 percent of unmarried men and 60 percent of unmarried women are not in a relationship. It gets worse: Around 42 percent of men and 44.2 percent of women admitted that they were virgins.

Japan has a worrying number of virgins, government finds
