Just spent a couple of weeks at a popular holiday resort in Catalonia. Very interesting to observe the male swimwear. Most guys, I would say over 90%, wore american-style loose swim shorts, mostly mid-thigh length. A few wore fitted hipster-style trunks, and only a couple, the sort who shouldn't, wore bikini/speedo styles, but too loose to see any indication of package inside.
Even more interestingly, it was obvious that many shorts-wearers were wearing underpants under their swim shorts - one hunk was wearing white almost knee-length close-fitting trunks, you could see the white built-in supporter through the material, and you could see that he had a pair of black hipster underpants under that. Many men, teenagers to middle age, had the waistband of their underpants showing above the waistband of their swim-shorts.
Are we getting so very coy these days? Not so long ago, in most European resorts, speedo-styles would be the norm, and you could tell the Americans by their longer all-concealing shorts. In fact, I remember reading a couple of years ago that French swimming pools banned loose shorts, swimmers had to wear speedos or similar close-fitting trunks.
