I currently have Verizon and unfortunately I cannot 'grandfather' my unlimited data plan if I upgrade my phone. Another carrier I have been looking at is Sprint. I can get the Galaxy S3 for free, and I can continue to receive unlimited data as well. I live in Kansas City, which is the home to Sprint, so I'm hoping the data coverage is good - but I've heard some horror stories. Does anybody have Sprint and have opinions on it? Is it worth the switch?

I used to have Verizon, then Sprint, now I have AT&T. Each move was a step up for me, so I would tell you to pick Sprint over Verizon, but if AT&T is an option, look closely at them.

I had Verizon once upon a time, and they had the WORST customer service ever! I don't think I ever came so close to having a stroke from the fury they made me feel when dealing with them. I switched to Sprint, and have been relatively happy with them--their coverage seems to improve every year, no major issues with customer service, etc. Their pricing isn't the best, but Im personally willing to pay a LITTLE more if I don't have to suffer endless frustration dealing with the company or their service.

I have Verizon and have no problems. Their 4g is killing everyone. I know people who have Sprint and who use to have Sprint. Atleast here they have crappy phones and crappy service. At&t is good if you want something new. I've always said Verizon has good service but att has better phones. I don't think that anymore.

I have seen people with Sprint get cut off all the time. Even in big cities they get knocked off.
I have had AT&T for more than a decade, no problems. They even held up during the bad storm back in October both in New York City and up in Connecticut where I had no electric for 3 weeks.

What this person said.

I have had Sprint for 12 years. I had AT&T for a minute (I could not get service in my NY apartment)
Strange you had such trouble. When in my New York place I have always gotten good signals. Alright, I've had a total of 6 maybe 7 dropped calls in more than a decade. Less than 1 per year. I see people with Sprint constantly having trouble and don't even get me started on the horrors people with Verizon have.

AT&T Signal is always strong, even get it when in the stairwell of my apt. building, and the stairwell is enclosed with surrounding solid walls. Great signal throughout the city, all 5 boroughs and even in the midtown tunnel I got a signal.

You'll definitely notice an increase in speed in AT&T and Verizon compared with Sprint. Even though Sprint now has 58 LTE cities (compared with AT&T and Verizon's hundreds), their LTE is still slower. Once you get outside Kansas City, you'll switch to 4G (if you're lucky) or 3G.

I looked at Sprint a few years ago (even it was a step up from Cincinnati Bell), but decided on AT&T. Very good service, phones, and excellent customer service (despite all the online complaints).

Also, if you're looking at getting new phones, go to Best Buy. They can take care of the whole process there and the phones will be cheaper.

I was in the same situation. I had verizon and both verizon & att stopped the unlimited data plans, so I looked into sprint. I think the new data options of att and verizon SUCK!

Anyway, I sealed the deal after learning that the company I work for gets a discount at Sprint. They also have the only 4g lte in my area. I am super happy with my galaxy note 2 and happy with sprint service thus far. No complaints. Plus with discount I'm paying less than 70 per month for unlimited text and data. I watch tv in bed on my phone and dont have to count megabytes.

What can I say... When I lived on the top floor and had an apartment filled with skylights I could get a signal. When I moved down to a garden level apartment in the back of the building I could not even get one bar. I see people with iphones out on the street all the time with the same problem.

For voice coverage Sprint is the best for a few reasons. 1 is that you roam onto Verizon if there is no Sprint coverage. I know they are trying to limit this but if you search the XDA forums you can find hacks to do it. The 2nd reason is the frequency used by CDMA (Verizon & Sprint Voice) compared to AT&T and T-mobile which uses GSM. The lower the frequency the greater distance the signal can penetrate a building.

Verizon 4G coverage has no competition. I just read that they are have already covered 85% of their 3G coverage area with 4G LTE.

But there are ways to keep your unlimited data with Verizon. If you pay full retail for the phone you don't need to sign a contract extension and continue on your current plan month to month. The 2nd way is a little harder because you need to have an old phone that doesn't require a data plan. You can add a regular voice only phone to your account for $10 per month. After you do that you upgrade that line with a new phone at the reduced price. Then go online to the Verizon site and swap the new phone to your current line and move the old talk only phone back to the new line but you have to continue to pay $10/month or pay the ETF of $175 for a regular phone line.

i had sprint for 2 years, was pretty happy with them and generally had good download speeds and few interruptions in service. some months i would use 20 GB+ data per month and they really don't throttle. however, sprint customer service is a JOKE, i've found t-mobile to be much better in that regard...

DickHurtz22 beat me to the point I was going to make as well if you like your unlimited data plan and if you are taking advantage of it then keep Verizon. I'm still on mine grandfathered in so to speak. I'm not upgrading any time soon. I'll keep my phone file insurance or just save up to pay full retail price for it. Nothing beats having unlimited data especially for someone who uses 20GB every month. 2GB is a joke and would cost me a ton to pay for.

Just an idea.
