My doctor today told me "your cholesterol is horrible!" (his exact words) Since my diet and activity are unchanged and acceptable, and due to family history, we decided on adding a station to my meds (Crestor/rosuvastatin).

I forgot to ask him whether to expect any effects on my sexual health. Any men here who take Crestor and who noticed anything to be aware of? (I will ask my doctor at my follow-up)

Hello. I used to take Crestor and did not notice any difference in my erections, or overall sexual health. I was eventually taken off Crestor and put on the generic Atorvastatin, due to the cost of Crestor. No difference with Atorvastatin either. The way I look at it, I think statins actually help with erections as they get rid of all that cholesterol gunk in the blood stream...

There was a time, briefly, when simvastatin (Zocor) first hit the market that some believed it would replace Viagra, by cleaning out clogged penile arteries. I don't believe that hope ever came to fruition. There was some concern initially that the statins would block sex hormone synthesis, since all are based on a cholesterol skeleton, but again, never came to fruition. If you look at your question from outside the box, if those statins keep you alive longer, then they will be adding years when you can engage in sexual activity. As a statin taker for many years, taking them is almost like taking a placebo. No side effects, no downside, nada. Of course, having just turned 105 on my last birthday, I will say that my knees do bother me a bit. Take the damn pill - life is too short to waste!

Not directly about ED and statins, but important.

I did 23&Me a few years ago. It came back with a warning that I had the gene for a specific reaction to statins. Namely, that statins could provoke muscular degeneration.

Two uncles lived into their late eighties, and as often happens, their hearts began to flutter. Doctors prescribed statins. Both experienced muscular degeneration and died not long after. Their wives, my aunts-by-marriage, are a nurse and a pharmacist, were livid at doctors' prescribing the drugs.

I am toying with getting a tattoo on my chest that says "KEINE STATINE. NO STATINS."

My Integrative Medicine doctor says to avoid statins for the reason listed by @headbang8 . Also very hard as are all medications on the kidneys. Take a look at the ever increasing number of dialysis centers opening up around any city and you see the attack on the kidneys.

Thanks for the heads-up. Was that part of the ancestral testing, the wellness reports, or the health risks? I don't find mention of statin sensitivity on their list of tests.

@portlad beat me to an answer, and provided much better insight than I could!

My test was done quite a few years ago, before the CDC forced them to be more circumspect with the information they share. It simply appeared in a long list of genetic health risks. Along with psoriasis (which I have on top of my left foot) and likely back trouble (ditto).

Oh, and it also warned me I’d suffer male pattern baldness. Bingo on that one, too. :emoji_older_man:
