Gay -- probably early in his career (as so many young actors do to further their career). I think almost all actors are in flux over their sexual identity. I've met many actors who were bisexual if not 75% gay. Very few of them have no fooled around at one time or another. Years ago I read a biography where Elsa Lanchester talks about her famous husband, Charles Laughton, who was a gay man. She states that Charles had a young actor lover named Steve Martin. I used to be a member of Actor's Equity and Screen Actor's Guild and at the time, much to my distress, I couldn't join under my real name because there was a previous actor with my same name that joined before me. It's a actor's union rule that one name equals one member because no two actors can work under the same name. For instance, a young actress can't join the union as Julia Roberts (even if it's her real name), as the famous Julia has a sort of trademark on the use of her name ... So I always knew there had to be a one and only Steve Martin in the Actor's Unions. Therefore I assumed that Charle's lover was the one and only Steve Martin befoe he became famous. This can be verified if you want to go to the library and check out the biography by Elsa Lanchester, Charles Laughton: An Intimate Biography. New York: Doubleday, 1976. Lanchester, Elsa
