To all you straight guys, what was your reaction the first time you saw two guys kissing?
My guess is that for some it was weird and uncomfortable to see, and for others it didn't really evoke anything. I base that on the converse for me... until I was about 20 I paid literally no attention to TV and magazine ads of men and women kissing. They may as well have been taking out the trash. It literally evoked
nothing in me, something that would no doubt dismay the product sponsors if there were a lot of people like me. For 20 years I didn't know I was supposed to have a positive, visceral reaction, so I didn't.
Then I saw two guys holding hands and kissing, and
wham... it's like my world went from black-and-white to color. Suddenly I got the whole idea of why affection/sex sells products. It hooks people in. I could relate.
I sheepishly admit I'm a little like The DofD. He's unaffected by males and females he's not actively engaged with or engaging, and I have no reaction to females that surround me. To be more blunt, I react the same way to females as I react to trees or tables. They're just there, but not exactly... animate. Well, animate, but ornamental. We pass through the same universe, but ultimately will not have sex or probably anything to talk about. So, a man hugging a woman is not grotesque to me, but neither is a man hugging a tree. 'Bout the same.
Maybe most straight men today are equally blasé about 2 guys.
