It had been nine days, thirteen hours and about forty-four minutes since she left his room when she finally made eye contact with him on the second floor of the administration building. She looked down immediately, pretending to feel her phone buzz in her back pocket. But Wiley did not simply pass her by. He stopped beside her and waited for her to have her phony conversation as students passed them. By the time she looked at him again, he was smiling. She had not fooled him.
"Hi," he said, barely audibly.
"Hi."
"Haven't seen you in calculus. I copied my notes for you though." He began to shuffle about in his backpack.
"Thanks," she said painfully. Wiley fished out some papers and handed them to her. After a long pause of looking into each other's eyes Lizzie spoke first.
"Wanna come over to my place to study tonight?" she said finally. "I really have some catching up to do now. My roommate will be there, but she is cool."
"OK," he said too quickly he thought. He was just no good at playing cool. He was lucky to have a second chance with Lizzie. This time he would not mess up. He was going to take it slow.
