We had two "gay bars" at my home town, I never actually went there because I've heard it was really not a good place to go. The owners entitled itself as an "alternative bar", and in reality it was basically a matter of style, certantly not of public. A dance club with the style of gay bar (has pop diva songs all the time, glitter, once or twice a month had drag queens, etc). A LOT of straight people went there. It was just not possible to go as a closeted gay man having a moment of openness, it was just another place filled with straight people, be open at your own risk.
Anyway, people here are talking about bachelorette parties being the worst, but here's what's actually worse: straight women dragging their annoyed boyfriends to gay bars. Not as common as they going with a group of women, but not so uncommon here. I once heard a girl colleague commenting, giggling, how her boyfriend was infuriated and disgusted at the "faggotry" of some guy in the bar.

Bars and clubs often have no choice but to encourage a mixed audience to pay the bills. I believe there's a few reasons for this.

Gays can be quite fickle. What's hot one year can be passé the next.

Gays are more widely accepted within the community too, so many are lured to the bigger hetero clubs.

One advantage of gay clubs used to be that you probably won't lose any teeth flirting with a guy while drunk. These days phone apps allow you to find trade from the comfort of your own home.

I typically find the just the base experience of going to a gay bar gross, creepy, irritating, and all-around aversive, so there being a few women there doesn't make it particularly worse, no.

In London and Brighton (UK) where I've lived thee was general acceptance of the ladies joining us in the gay bars especially dance venues as they could enjoy themselves and most of us gay guys loved the ladies being there. Most had a rule about no big bachelorette parties as they just got incredibly pissed and annoying once in.

As time's gone on it seems that more of the big girl parties were being allowed in and also a lot more obviously straight guys too - the straight guys just going for attention and teasing I think, on the whole.

I rarely go these days as is the same with most of my gay friends because of this and as a previous poster said, if you're just coming out or exploring your sexuality, they are not necessarily the safe places they once were.

there is a club in Vancouver that calls itself a gay dance club yet the number of straight women as well as men is quite substantial, or it was back when i lived in Vancouver. I can understand why the women were there; safe, or supposedly so, environment to dance but the men that were not gay caused undue hardship for many. Like the health officials are saying, stay the hell home guys and leave the gay clubs to the gay clientele

I do not like women at gay bars, particularly if there is porn playing or anything sexual happening (whether it be go-go dancers or corner action). One time, some idiot brought his sister to the NY Eagle, then left her on the second floor after midnight while he was talking to someone. She looked traumatized, and I was extra uncomfortable.
