For a laugh, i do like Nick Hornby. A Long Way Down and About a Boy are funny and very heartfelt. For lowbrow fratboy humor, i did like I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell.

Other recommendations:
The Kite Runner as everyone has said, but also the author's second book, A Thousand Splendid Suns.
The Time Traveler's Wife. God, i loved that book. So wonderful! The movie, not so much.

I was gonna suggest On the Road. I had to read it in college for my seminar "Car Culture in the United States".

Also:
Wicked by Gregory Maguire
Nemesis by Agatha Christie
Selected Stories by Anton Chekhov (or similar anthology - quite enjoyable)
The Once and Future King by T H White (couldn't put it down)

Everything is Illuminated - Jonathan Safran Foer
Thank you for Smoking - Christopher Buckley
What is the What - Dave Eggers
And I second the Nick Hornby, Long Way Down is a good read.

Read some Lauren Eiseley. The Immense Journey, or The Star Throwers are two of my favs. He is an essayist who focuses a lot on human development and nature. Some serious meaning of life type stuff. Uber deep and guaranteed to keep you entertained and mentally stimulated for hours! Enjoy.

About a month back, I posted a list and short review of books I read this past year. (Of course nobody replied of course .... might be long, that's probably why)

http://www.lpsg.org/160197-compilation-of-books-with-review.html#post2468069

But you can check it out and see what I've read. There might be something in that list you liike ! And don't worry. There's no sci-fi in there:)

I'm looking for some pretty amazing books to read over the Christmas break. This can include prose/poetry. Any Suggestions?

Turn of the screw is an excellent choice !

An excellent book by the British scientist JAMES LOVELOCK is The Revenge of Gaia. He is one of the many who have warned us of the impending climate change and the role of humanity & what could happen as far back as the 70's but his heedings fell on deaf ears !

100 Years Of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I can't vouch for it's quality of prose in English, but in Spanish it was just marvelous.
