Suicide at Rutgers

This story has been covered very closely in the NY metro area. Unfortunately there is no happy ending for anyone, Tyler Clementi's parents stated that prior to the trial they never got a word of apology or a simple condolence from Dharun Ravi... Very sad.
It is really sad. :(

Was wondering whether a 10yr sentence is too harsh, or not? What he did was stupid and cruel - and he's responsible for putting it up there on the net, for not judging what the outcome would be - and for the consequences. Just not sure what kind of sentence that should bring with it?

I wish I could answer your question but I can't. In ten years Tyler Clementi will still be dead and his parents will still be grieving. From the start of this story when Mr Clementi killed himself I have been sad and angry and have not been able to pick myself up from the initial sadness and anger.
I became a lawyer to help protect the innocent and eventually worked to punish the guilty; I learned long ago like in this case that either way it is often difficult to come to terms with your decisions in the cold gray light of dawn. I hope Mr. Ravi will come to terms with the consequences of his actions and not write a book that will eventually become a made for television Lifetime movie.
But my biggest hope is that Jane and Joseph Clementi can find some peace someday... they will never stop grieving but I hope they can start to pull the pieces of their lives together again and somehow put a widely publicized media frenzy of their son and his death behind them and grieve and live in peace the way most of us take for granted when something tragic colors the world we live in.
So maybe we will have an answer in ten years, I'm hopeful but I have my doubts.

As a former victim of bullying, I will say this. I'm glad he got ten years and I wished he could have gotten more.

Unless you have been bullied about your sexuality then you really don't understand the pain and fear that one lives with.

my heart goes out to the Clementi family.

Unfortunately there is no happy ending for anyone,

This is the saddest part of it all. There can be no happy ending. A young man is dead, and many others' lives will never be the same. Over a childish act of cruelty.

I'm sure that his lawyers forbade him from doing so. To apologise is to admit culpability - or, so is the fear in the legal world. Of course, that's assuming he feels remorse about what he did. If he does, he's stifled until all appeals are exhausted, so no timely apology can be made to the Clementis; if he doesn't, they'll get nothing worth listening to from him anyway.

Here's hoping that the next person who thinks of doing something like Mr. Ravi did thinks about this example before engaging in such cruelty.

I know - including Ravi's. :/ Tbh, randomly thoughtless acts often have huge repercussions. Mebbe we all need to think a bit more b4 we act (I certainly do)?

Living in the NY Metropolitain area, this was all over the news from start to finish. Very very sad story indeed. Most of us here on LPSg are mature and must remember that youth and stupid go hand in hand. Today we have the internet and computers everywhere.

Think back to the movies of old:

Porkies- the boys spy on the girles while they shower
Animal House the famous John Belushi on a ladder outside the girles dorm room.
American Pie - guy wanted his friends to see him with hot chick via web cam
Revenge of the Nerds, when the nerds hide cams in the girles dorm and watch them for hours.

Do I think the room mate was an ass, yes. Do I think he would have done what he did even if there was a guy and a chick making out, yes. Was it an invasion of privacy, yes. Do I think his parents kicked his ass for blowing his education and future heck yes.

Do I think it was A Hate Crime, I do not know ???????????????????????
